Donald Trump took a break from the golf course and had an eventful week going from the G7 Summit to a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.
At the G7 in Quebec, Trump did what he does best and antagonized our allies. After the summit, Trump took to Twitter to criticize Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from Canada.
Donald said "PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild" and that Trudeau was "very dishonest & weak."
Trump then threatened to escalate the trade war that he himself started.
At the summit with North Korea in Singapore, Trump said that Jong-Un is "a talented man who loves his country very much. An honor to meet him."
When speaking of the North Korean dictator, Trump tweeted that "Chairman Kim has before him the opportunity to be remembered as the leader who ushered in a glorious new era of security & prosperity for his citizens!"
This could not be further from the truth. North Korea is well-known for being one of the most oppressive countries in the entire world. North Koreans cannot leave the country or even move within their own country without permission from the government. Freedoms of speech and religion are non-existent. There have been food shortages for nearly three decades now, and hospitals are only available to those who can afford it.
North Korea is no friend to the United States and is nothing like us. But Trump, by meeting with Kim Jong-Un and having the American flag next to the North Korean flag, elevated the oppressive regime as if the U.S. and North Korea are equals. Trump has shown an actual disrespect of the American flag unlike the NFL players whom he likes to lambaste.
Imagine if President Obama had met with Kim Jong-Un and given him the same praise as Trump did. Oddly enough, one doesn't have to imagine too hard. NowThis made a great compilation of the difference in Fox News' commentary on Obama's willingness to meet with enemies, such as North Korea, and Trump's desire to meet with Kim Jong-Un. Some have called Fox racist for this, and while I can see their point, I disagree. This is nothing more than partisan politics. Bias in political talk is expected from someone like a politician. But it's despicable coming from an organization that calls itself news.
Praise for authoritarians is nothing new for Trump. He speaks highly of dictators and has been since the election when he had constant praise for Vladimir Putin. He has praised Turkish dictator Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan. When Chinese president Xi Jinping essentially made himself dictator, Trump praised him and even alluded to doing the same.
It's obvious the type of leader Trump likes: an authoritarian who oppresses his own people and only cares about himself and few around him. He's picked fights with leaders of democracies like Angela Merkel of Germany, Trudeau of Canada, Macron of France and Theresa May of the United Kingdom. But Putin, Rodrigo Duterte, ErdoÄŸan and Jong-Un are good people who have strong command over their countries.
Trump would love to be like one of those dictators, but thankfully for America he is an impotent president, and the checks and balances our forefathers put in place prepared us for someone like Trump who tries to take power for himself.
