When I was told body-shaming was wrong, I agreed. When I was told homophobia and slut-shaming were wrong, I agreed.
Being culturally progressive, politically correct, whatever you want to call it, was never a question for me. Eventually, I even felt comfortable calling out friends and relatives on their remarks that could be, and often are, offensive to groups of people.
And then Donald Trump ran for and won, the presidency of the United States.
We do not need to go on and on about his record of offensive remarks and discriminatory policies, I already did and the list is quite extensive.
The bottom line is, Trump is a bad person, and his rhetoric and policies bring out the worst in America. Sometimes he makes me ashamed to be an American.
Trump has a lot of critics, the vast majority of American citizens to be exact. Trump is easy to criticize, but a lot of high profile "#Resistance" liberals resort to really low attacks on Trump.
Older white women who give off the vibe that they want to speak to the manager are usually associated with the Republican voter base, but they can be Democrats too. A lot of them are diehard Hillary Clinton supporters obsessed with the Trump/Russia scandal.
Part of their obsession with Russia includes Trump being in love with and possibly having a relationship with Russian President, Vladimir Putin. However, they use this as an attack on Trump. Why? If Trump was in love with Vladimir Putin… what would be your issue with that?
If Trump was gay, he would not be weaker or less of a man, and he certainly wouldn't be any more or less of a bad person. People create street art of Trump and Putin embracing and kissing, sometimes more overtly sexual acts are displayed.
The truth is, liberals are using this as an attack on Trump when it should be anything but. It is actually very homophobic to suggest that being gay or Trump wanting to perform sexual acts on another man is some sort of "gotcha."
Trump is also body-shamed a lot; he is fat, but are we not supposed to love our bodies? As Dr. Seuss said, "some friends are fat, and there's nothing wrong with that."
And of course, there's the parade of people thinking they are comic geniuses for calling him a "Cheeto" because he gets really bad spray tans. Again, what are you gaining from this? How does this attack on Trump do anything other than make it easier for him to play the victim to his base?
These questions should also be raised when jokes about Trump's hands, hair, appearance, and the size of his penis are made. If all of these jokes would be going too far had they been made about a Democratic president, why then, is it okay for them to be hurled at Republicans?
The criticisms by liberals of the First Lady are often the same. Melania posed nude during her modeling career and that somehow makes her unqualified to be the First Lady.
Liberals accuse Melania of not having any class… when did they become the new Puritans? What happened to the large scion of the Women's March that rightly fight against slut-shaming? Melania is not less of a person for posing nude and celebrating her beauty and femininity.
Holding women to such standards is misogynistic and liberals are being ideologically inconsistent when they try to attack Melania for doing what they would celebrate anyone else doing.
Now people may try to argue that Trump is so bad that attacks like this are totally deserved, brutal as they may be. However, to that I would say, listen to your average Trump supporter's thoughts on Hillary Clinton. Do you really want to be lumped in with those people?
