President Trump's Twitter attack called out Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, as well as her fellow freshmen Congresswomen AOC, Ayana Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. His message was essentially "Go back to where you came from." Capture this in three words, "send her back," and you have the new version of "lock her up" from his 2016 campaign.
It makes sense that Trump is making a female politician an enemy of the public since it worked in his favor in 2016. However, the issue points to a bigger problem in America's relationship with blame. In fact, this is no longer an American issue, it's a global issue. Governments with nationalist views took power in the last five years all over the world, and they all point blame on a minority. The effects of this are incredibly dangerous, as history has shown. If you don't believe me, think back to Hitler who used the minority Jewish population as his target for blame. An example today is India's Prime Minister Modi who has been attacking Muslims and other non-Hindus, therefore worsening relations with Pakistan.
What makes it worse is that a minority is truly outnumbered and unprotected for the most part. It is easy to get a majorly white America with a majorly white electorate to either stay quiet or publicly support someone like President Trump.
Trump's belief that the Congresswomen of color would be better off changing their countries of heritage rather than making an impact in the U.S. is symbolic of the white colonizer's view. Let me explain. The colonizer who is responsible for the class tensions, poor government, and corruption in its former colony makes itself a victim and tells people of color that they are responsible for their countries... as if the past four hundred years or so have no lasting impact. Going back to my country is not an option because borders meant nothing to your ancestors, President Trump. So why should I care now?
When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says "We will not go back", she channels the experiences of colonial oppression. She means we will not go back to being pawns in your play of world order. We will not go back to our countries, just because you do not acknowledge our American citizenship.
Trump is once again running on a campaign of hatred, distracting the nation from all his terrible decisions in his current term. Yet, the women in Congress today give me some hope that our electorate will not let that slide in this election.
