Before I chose to try yoga, I thought that it was just a bunch of hoopla. The whole sitting in meditation idea was very foreign to me- considering every time I sat in silence my mind wouldn't stop reminding me of the 4 million other things I should be doing instead.
When I signed up, I knew that forcing myself to go to a group class would be a good way for me to get myself to focus purely on yoga and not the things going on around me, although I was skeptical of how it would go. Personally, I am not very flexible and have not done much working out since I played volleyball in high school 3 years ago.
Walking up to the studio, I was a little nervous not knowing what to expect, but when I walked in the girl at the counter looked up at me and asked if I was there for the yoga instructor training... I guess you can look the part even when you have no idea what you're doing.
The first class was a little confusing. Our instructor would say the names of positions which, obviously, I didn't know and had to check out everyone else to figure out what to do. It surprisingly wasn't that hard to keep up though as the instructor would walk around and help to position people.
As I kept going back to the class, I kept getting better, obviously, and would know more of what to expect. I realized that yoga is actually a lot more complicated than people think. You really have to focus on holding your body in certain positions and keep your breathing steady. The focus is on you even if you are competitive it feels more like you are only competing against yourself to be better.
Having the calm music with the calming voices of the instructors who are helping you and giving encouraging words to reflect on really make it worth it. The ability to really be peaceful is a rare opportunity when you're in college. There is always something to be doing, but yoga allowed me to stop everything I was doing and actually focus on myself and relaxing while also finding a stress reliever.
Overall, I would definitely suggest yoga to anyone who is considering doing it. Yes, the first couple of classes will be hard and slightly awkward but it is totally worth it. Between regaining some flexibility and releasing tension from the body you genuinely feel better. Plus, it's just fun to try a different kind of workout that doesn't makes your lungs want to burst.
