Tricks For Surviving Finals Week

The snow is falling and the end of the semester is right around the corner. This means Christmas is coming faster than you can imagine. Of course, that means you will have a break that's three weeks to a month and a half that is completely school free! I know its awesome and amazing, but you still have one more "exam" that you have to take before you're home free. And by "exam" I mean you have to survive finals week. Yes, to some, this is the most dreaded time of the semester, but with proper skills and techniques, exams will be a piece of cake!

1. Write it down

Whether it's writing it down in your planner, or putting sticky notes around your room, write it down! Put all of your exam times and locations into some sort of planner or on some sheet of paper (no, a napkin from the cafe doesn't work). If you write things down, you're more likely to be prepared for your upcoming exams, and you will know when you're supposed to be studying, rather than binge-watching Netflix.

2. Make time

Binge studying or preparing never works. I know I am going to sound like your professor but, you really should be studying each day. If you chose to study for both of your exams the night before, you should only chose to study one subject then. Trying to cram all of the information from the semester into your brain will not only hurt you academically, it will hurt you mentally. You will drain yourself before your exam and have trouble remembering material.

3. Take breaks

Studies have shown that students who take a five or 10 minute break every hour while studying are proven to do better on an exam. So when you're studying for that calc final, take a break and watch some TV or listen to some music for five minutes to let loose. If you do decide to cram all the material into your brain, then don't forget the necessities of your life: eat, drink and sleep. Taking care of your body during finals week is a major issue that many students fail to adhere by. Listen to your body! If you're tired and can't seem to keep your eyes open when reading your notes, take a 20-minute nap to help boost your energy level. And whatever you do, do not rely on energy drinks and coffee to help you get through Hell Week. Energy drinks are very bad for your body since they contain excessive amounts of sugar that seem to do more harm than good.

4. Know your learning style

Everyone has their own way of learning. Some learn better in groups, some learn better reading the book alone. Don't try to force yourself to study if it's not your way of learning because it won't do much for you. If you like to learn by quizzing yourself, use flashcards or online tools like Quizlet. Find what works for you and stick with it.

So with these tips and tricks go forth and get that A on every one of your exams!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
