What Would You Do If You Were Trapped In A Basement For 25 Years?

That's what happened to a Toronto man in the 1980s.

Light has been shed over an ordeal that left a Toronto man enslaved in a basement for over 25 years.

Gary Willett Sr. and his wife Maria face kidnapping, assault, and theft charges after holding Tim Goldrick and his then-girlfriend Barbara Bennett. While enslaved, Goldrick and Bennett were abused and fed dog food. Additionally, the Willets stole social assistance checks that belonged to Goldrick and Bennett. In the late 1980s, Bennett had a child whom the Willetts took as their own. The Willets were able to become the legal parents and additionally named the boy Gary Willett Jr, even though Goldrick was the biological father. To make things even messier, Bennett had a second child, Billie Jean, with Willett Sr.'s brother!

In the 90s, Bennett was able to escape with Billie Jean, leaving behind Willett Jr. and Goldrick. It wasn't until 2012 when Willett Jr. ran away from home, was he able to put the pieces together. Goldrick was able to escape after Willett Jr. spotted Goldrick walking back to the Willetts' home.

It's shocking that something like this could happen today. What goes on inside a person's mind to go through kidnapping a couple and stealing a baby from them? Additionally, why didn't Barbara Bennett go to police after she was able to escape? Had Gary Willett Jr not dug deeper into his roots, there was a good chance Tim Goldrick would've been subjected to continued abuse for the rest of his life.

At least justice for this bizarre event will be served--albeit 25 years late.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
