Unless you have been living on another planet for the past month or so, you know that on Friday, November 10, 2017 Taylor Swift released her 6th studio album, reputation.reputation was the most highly anticipated album of the year, and the success that this album has already had in the short time since it's release, confirms this statement as well.
Since the release of reputation, Miss Swift has witnessed the enormous amount of success the album has had including: reaching the #1 album worldwide on iTunes only 6 minutes after release, selling 700K+ US copies in 24 hours and 1.5M+ worldwide, and becoming her 5th consecutive album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts.
And they hype? It's so justified. reputation shows a new, more upbeat side to Taylor Swift with less of her typical ballad love songs and more upbeat songs discussing more risky topics. There is not one song on the album that could not stand on its own as a single, and that, is how you know Taylor Swift truly has done it, again.
Here is every song, broken down:
"...Ready For It?"
Thoughts: A very intense, and appropriate intro to the album. Accurately sets the mood for the rest of the songs.
Best lyrics: "Every lover known in comparison is a failure."
"End Game (feat. Ed Sheeran and Future)"
Thoughts: Personally, I think this is the weakest song on the album. However, this is the one song on the album that has a way of always getting stuck in your head.
Best lyrics: "And I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em."
"I Did Something Bad"
Thoughts: Undisputedly, one of the best songs on the album. The lyrics of this track are incredibly strong and has a beat that makes you have to dance paired with it. In my opinion, if Taylor were to release this song as a single she would be unstoppable.
Best lyrics: "If a man talks shit, then I owe him nothin'. Don't regret it one bit cause he had it comin'."
"Don't Blame Me"
Thoughts: This song is soul changing. Vocally it's Taylor's best song on the album but also doesn't lack a solid beat or chilling lyrics.
Best lyrics: "I once was poison ivy but now I'm your daisy."
"Delicate"
Thoughts: All fans know that this was the ever-so-anticipated Track 5. To me, it didn't live up to the hype of All Too Well and All You Had To Do Was Stay (but I mean, how could it have?), but this is a solid song nonetheless that you can tell means a lot to Taylor and her current love with Joe.
Best lyrics: "Sometimes I wonder when you sleep, are you ever dreaming of me?"
"Look What You Made Me Do"
Thoughts: This should not have been the lead single off of the album. However, I will admit that I do love this song and think that it was the classiest way for her to diss Kanye West.
Best lyrics: "Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time."
"So It Goes..."
Thoughts: This song is so good, but tell me why no one can seem to remember how it goes unless they're listening to it. Everything about this song is forgettable and blends into the others, but is still amazing in its own way. Not to mention her very intense "1, 2, 3..."
Best lyrics: "And all our pieces fall, back into place."
"Gorgeous"
Thoughts: Originally, I wasn't a fan of this song, however, I do think that it fits well into the album. Still one of the weaker songs but is definitely a cute love song.
Best lyrics: "You should think about the consequence of your magnetic field being a little too strong."
"Getaway Car"
Thoughts: Easily my favorite song on the album. This song has the best metaphor, which is what I love most about Taylor's songs. Also, this song sounds like it could've come straight off of Speak Now, Red, or 1989, proving that the "Old Taylor" is indeed not dead.
Best lyrics: "X marks the spot where we fell apart."
"King Of My Heart"
Thoughts: A true modern day love story. Kind of an average song overall on the album, but definitely has a unique storyline and lyrics.
Best lyrics: "Cause all of these boys with their expensive cars, their Range Rovers and their Jaguars, never quite took me where you do."
"Dancing With Our Hands Tied"
Thoughts: Another fave!! Somehow this is both the cutest love song but also such a danceable bop. How does she do it?!
Best lyrics: "Deep blue, but you painted me golden."
"Dress"
Thoughts: I can't even. So seductive. So mature. So... I thought she was just that girl who played her guitar and faked a country accent?
Best lyrics: "And if I get burned, at least we were electrified."
"This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things"
Thoughts: Oh, if you thought "Look What You Made Me Do" was shady, this takes things to a whole new level. I was very skeptical of this song when I heard the title but after hearing the catchy beats and Gatsby references, I am hooked.
Best lyrics: "It was so nice throwing big parties, jump into the pool from the balcony. Everyone swimming in a champagne sea."
"Call It What You Want"
Thoughts: To me, this is the cutest song on the album, and the bigger and more sophisticated sister of "New Romantics". Every lyric is so quotable and this is the one song where I can truly feel every emotion with Taylor.
Best lyric: "All my flowers grew back as thorns."
"New Years Day"
Thoughts: There is no song more perfect to end the album with than this one. Yet, another song that proves that the "Old Taylor" isn't dead but is rather still sitting at home being a hopeless romantic.
Best lyrics: "Please don't ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere."
