For my Spring Break, I spent it with my family in Mexico. I was able to spend my days in the little towns where my grandparents grew up, be with family I haven’t seen in two years, and eat Mexican food that I love (but everyone made fun of me because I’m a vegetarian). Yes, I went to Mexico for Spring Break, and I was in a small town you have probably never heard of.
I was not your typical Spring Breaker in Mexico. I was not in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, or Acapulco. No, I was somewhere you would probably never see a tourist. I’m not saying there’s something wrong with going there because it’s a beautiful place, but if you ever do, you will probably see all American tourists.
Most of the time, majority of the people will end up going to tourist attractions when they travel to a different country - or any other place, in general. Tourism is a form of revenue for countries, such as Cancun for Mexico. It is where they obtain a lot of money for their economy, which is good for Mexico’s country. However, the problem with tourism is that you are probably only seeing the attractive parts of the country. I am not going to lie, Mexico does have problems. And sure, there are some areas that are not always “safe”. But when you go to a tourist place, like Acapulco, you are not getting the whole experience of being in that country. Chances are that when you go, you are probably only staying in the resort area. So I ask, what is the point of going to that country, when that is all you’re going to do?
If you go to Mexico, you have to see all of it. I am telling you that you cannot just stay in your resort, and you should go out to see all the cultures of the country. Mexico, overall, has a beautiful culture, and each area and state has a different type of culture that you can experience. Wherever you go, I can guarantee you that it would not be the same as anywhere else. So, next time you go to Mexico, maybe plan a trip to somewhere you can meet real locals who can show you what real Mexico is like. And not be just another tourist.
Specifically, people who chanted “build the wall” while vacationing in Cancun for Spring Break, you are the most disrespectful people ever.
First, you come to Cancun - a beautiful place with one of the most amazing shores in Mexico - and trash them without any consideration. You come to party and drink beer, only to leave it everywhere to have the workers clean it up for you. You come as visitors to the country, so you should be on your best behaviors there. What you did was callous, and you should be the ones not allowed into our beautiful country. The irony as you privileged vacationers in Cancun chanting “build the wall” to keep Mexicans out of the United States, as you vacation in Mexico. You hate having Mexicans in the United States, but you want to be in Mexico. So tell me, which one is it?
