Growing up in Tornado Alley can have some pretty weird effects on you. You may get excited at the fact that a big storm is coming. While it takes a bit for that to happen, it does.
My hometown goes outside when we hear tornado sirens as well as driving closer to the storm if it's not near us. To anyone outside of the alley, this may seem a little insane, but to anyone who has lived there for their whole lives, it's a yearly thing.
Here are seven thoughts that I, as well as others, have during tornado season.
1. Do you think the tornado will hit the school? How long would we be out for?
There is always a hope that it would hit the high school and nothing else.
2. Should we move a few things to the basement in case the storm gets bad?
And you really debate it, because well, that's a lot of work for something that's not happening anytime soon.
3. It's a little too warm for this storm to actually cause a tornado so I'm not going to waste my time.
You've learned exactly what conditions needed to be in place for a tornado.
4. Hey! This county near us is in a tornado warning! Let's go!
Of course, you'll stay far enough away to keep out of the storms way. You just want to see it.
5. Are those the sirens? Let's go see where it's at!
Because you have to make sure the sirens aren't just being tested and there's actually a tornado. It's a good chance to see the neighbors as well.
6. The weatherman said that it was going to be sunny all day, of course, it's going to storm.
You just wanted one relaxing day without the weatherman interrupting your evening programs, is that too much to ask? Apparently, it is.
7. When you recorded a show because you had a busy day, but the whole show was a warning of storms.
You love the people in your state and you hope they all find safety, but they're more than likely not watching TV in their storm shelters. Usually, the little alert bar is just the right amount of warning.
These are just a few of the thoughts and struggles that someone in tornado alley goes through every spring. Of course, there are plenty more and not everyone reacts the same. To my fellow tornado alley residents, stay safe this spring.
