As a member of the socially awkward club, I’ve learned to adapt to various situations that make me blush or make me want to hide. Although there are a ton of things that make me feel awkward, here are the ten situations that take the cake:
Elevators
Where do I look? What do I say? Please don’t look at me. I’m pretty sure elevator minutes are longer than microwave minutes, and I spend the entirety of my ride staring at my shoes.
Making phone calls in front of people
Talking to strangers on the phone is torture enough, but having to do it in front of more than one person is a tragedy. I always leave the room when someone calls me when I’m in a room full of people, and I only talk on the phone at work because I literally have to.
Sitting next to strangers
My least favorite thing in the world in sitting in the middle of the aisle at sporting events. I will pay extra or accept seats that are farther from the event in order to have an end seat; my greatest fear is climbing over strangers, awkwardly stomping on their toes, and shoving my butt in their faces.
Compliments
Um, yes, thank you, this dress is pretty, that’s why I bought it. Um, I gotta go.
When you reply to someone when they aren’t even talking to you
Countless times, someone is talking to another person and I answer the question, thinking they’re talking to me. And then my face flushes and I shrug, and I have no advice on how to handle this situation.
Tripping
Sometimes, your feet conspire against you and that’s fine. Just accept it and move on.
Comforting people
I don’t even know how to react when I cry; how am I supposed to know what to do when you’re crying?
Icebreaker activites
No. I don’t want to break the ice. Please leave it frozen solid. Thanks.
Accidentally liking things on social media
Please excuse me while I delete all of my accounts.
Parties
I cannot handle awkward small talk and pretending to care about strangers’ hobbies. Is there a dog I can play with instead?
