In times of sadness, I find that my first reaction is to listen to music. Retreating to familiar voices makes me feel like I'm in the arms of friends that not only understand my pain but know exactly how I feel. I've spent years cultivating songs I listen to in my time of need, but these few songs are the saving grace of any playlist that is geared to make you feel better.
1. Ed Sheeran - "Save Myself"
"There's a feeling I get, // When I look to the west, // And my spirit is crying for leaving."This song has a way of attaching itself to your heart and not letting go. Even without the lyrics, Zepplin's voice is so mournful that you can't help but feel a twinge of sadness.
"I gave you all my energy and I took away your pain, // 'Cause human beings are destined to radiate or dream. // What line do we stand upon 'cause from here it looks the same, // And only scars remain."
Listening to this for the first time is a little rough, but after hearing it for a while, it gets you thinking about life and who has let you down. This is a song that is appropriate for any sad occasion or occurrence.
2. John Mayer - "Free Fallin'"
"And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows, // And the good girls are home with broken hearts.""Free Fallin'" is a song that is laced with regret. It's the type of song that is perfect for someone who has wronged or been wronged.
3. The Lumineers - "Cleopatra"
"But I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life, // And when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I'll be on time."
Life is anything but fair. This song is for the ones who have to deal with life, leaving them with heartache.
4. The Beatles - "Yesterday"
"Why she had to go, // I don't know, she wouldn't say, // I said something wrong, // Now I long for yesterday."
Perfect for nostalgia, "Yesterday" will help anyone who is stuck in the past. The Beatles have a way of telling a story in every one of their songs.
5. Train - "Drops Of Jupiter"
"Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star? // One without a permanent scar, // And did you miss me, // while you were looking for yourself out there?"
This song is not only a bop but it's nostalgic as well. It's perfect for any storm you may face.
6. Harry Styles - "Sign Of The Times"
"Just stop your crying, it'll be alright, // They told me that the end is near, // We gotta get away from here."
This song is more comforting than sad. Yet there's something tragic about the longing that hides behind the lyrics.
7. Imagine Dragons - "Demons"
"And the curtain's call is the last of all, // When the lights fade out, all the sinners crawl, // So they dug your grave and the masquerade, // Will come calling out at the mess you made."
This song is for the people who aren't comfortable with the shadowy parts of themselves. It's perfect for moments of self-doubt.
8. Fun - "Carry On"
"Though I've never been through hell like that, // I've closed enough windows to know you can never look back."
This is definitely another pick me up song. "Carry On" is not only strikingly honest but it's highly emotional as well.
9. Coldplay - "Viva La Vida"
"Just a puppet on a lonely string, // Oh, who would ever want to be king?"
A song of regret and loss, this oldie is perfect for anyone who feels incoming dread.
10. The Cast of Dear Evan Hansen - "Waving Through A Window"
"We start with stars in our eyes, // We start believing that we belong, // But every sun doesn't rise, // And no one tells you where you went wrong."
A song for the outcasts, this hit musical song will hit anyone where it hurts.
