As I sit here in my hometown’s local coffee shop (NO it is not as good as Nashville’s, YES I am that cliché) I can overhear the conversations of what I am guessing are 5th or 6th graders. They go up to the counter and only buy the necessities any person would at a coffee shop, Starbursts and Snickers, while discussing ceramic projects in Art class. While sitting here I am struck with questions most of us are hit with when around kids this age -
Did I wear leggings in 5th grade? (soft no, only gauchos)
Was I allowed to be in a coffee shop alone without a parent at that age?
Are these the things I talked about back then?
With this I decided to dedicate this week’s article to the common statements we said as youngsters, and maybe even still say today.
1. Are we there yet?
A typical line said once or twice or thirty times on any car ride longer than 10 minutes.
2. Can ______ play today?
Usually said to another parent either after a nice doorbell or as you called your best pal’s home phone number.
3. You never let me do anything.
Ah, definitely aimed at a parent when they said no to you going to the mall or going to see High School Musical 3 for the third time.
4. Did you guys watch the new Disney Channel movie?
The answer is always yes.
5. Why?
We were all just curious little tots and everything needed the deepest explanation.
6. Can I have the chicken tenders?
Honestly said at every restaurant from grades kindergarten to sophomore in high school.
7. Watch me do ____!!!
No matter the age we loved the attention whether it be from friends, relatives, the dog, parents, siblings, etc.
8. This isn't fair.
Probably said in a time of desperation when you were about to lose in Clue or Trouble.
