Things change. People, companies, events, and products need to re-brand in order to keep up with the changing times and to make sure that they stay giving their costumers and fans what they want. Here’s my top 7 rebrands from recent history.
7. McDonald’s.
While McDonald’s will never have a squeaky clean image that goes along with their dining experience, they have made strides to update their decorations and menu to appeal to a wider, less self-deprecating audience. Sure, ordering a big mac takes a few years off your life but now you can order a frappe coffee drink to pair nicely with said big mac.
6. Oxygen Network.
This one may have gone unnoticed by too many people. I’m sure if I were to ask you a show that plays on the Oxygen network you would say something that actually plays on the Lifetime network. Through their rebrand, Oxygen now shows only crime shows, a one stop shop for all things cop procedural.
5. Chris Pratt.
This may be more of a glow up than a rebrand but we shall count it anyway. Chris Pratt could’ve easily been typecast for the rest of his career as a the chubby, dumb, boyfriend that has a good one-liner every other episode. Now, he has a bright future as an action movie star and if he’s lucky he could be doing this job until he’s 73 like Tom Cruise.
4. Twitter.
This is a special case because this rebrand was completely created by the users and not the providers. After the acquisition and subsequent death of Vine, internet culture needed a comedic outlet. Vine was the laugh factory that determined what was trending on twitter. Now, Twitter is making every day tweets go viral and anyone a master meme maker.
3. MTV Award shows.
What the MTV lacks in hosts it makes up for in new content. This rebrand expanded the awards to include TV, in all its forms. Netflix shows were nominated for multiple awards and internet celebrities are given more and more credibility as their stardom becomes more and more credible.
2. Netflix.
Where Netflix could’ve become the next blockbuster, it rebranded and was self-aware enough to downplay its DVD mailing service, which you probably forgot about, and highlight their streaming features, even creating their own original content which has played into its continued success in no small part.
1. Taylor Swift.
Even though it may not be the easiest thing for me to admit Taylor Swift is the queen of the rebrand. Starting off as a small-town girl singing for tips at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, to a guitar playing, country pop singer, to a female-empowering pop icon, now to a woman scorned like which fury hell hath no.
