As anyone at this point probably knows, I love animated movies. Disney and Pixar own my heart, and I will gladly continue to watch them far too often. But while I love their big-hitters, there are tons of underrated animated movies out there that deserve some love. So I rounded up 5 of my top picks for animated movies that are slightly underrated.
1. "Treasure Planet."
Starting off with an underrated pick from Walt Disney Studios, the 2002 film "Treasure Planet" was an intergalactic take on the literary adventure, "Treasure Island." The movie's main character, Jim Hawkins, explores the galaxy as a cabin boy on a space ship. Literally. The creativity of this movie is spectacular, whether looking at the story, the characters or the technology that lives within this world.
2. "Anastasia."
Fun fact: "Anastasia" was actually created by Fox, although many liken it to Disney's princess films. The 1997 film was actually released during the Disney Renaissance, and although it doesn't garner the same fanfare, the quality is up to par with that of "The Little Mermaid" and others of the Disney Renaissance. Ana and the rest of the cast are wonderful, and as much as the story definitely differs from the historical context behind the events of the film, it's still a great watch.
3. "The Road to El Dorado."
Something about this pair is just hilarious to me. Dreamwork's 2000 film "The Road to El Dorado" is about the journey of Miguel and Tulio toward the City of Gold, i.e. El Dorado. This film is super fun, has great music thanks to Elton John, and is full of laughs.
4. "The Book Of Life."
Recently, I watched this movie a bit too much. "The Book of Life" came out in 2014 and didn't end up receiving much attention at the time of its release. Why? Frankly, I'm not sure. The visuals in this film are stunning and unique, and the cast is stacked with the likes of Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana. But, at the end of the day, it's simply a heart-melting story of a group of friends, and how far you can go when you follow your heart.
5. "Mr. Peabody and Sherman."
Finishing this off with probably my all-time favorite, "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" is a fantastic film by Dreamworks that somehow manages to create a great animated film about time travel. The 2015 movie was based on the book series of the same title. But this film manages to bring together a story about a dog and his boy and a story of saving the world from a rip in the space-time continuum. Sound awesome? Yes, yes it does.
