Are you looking for an alternative to your typical gym workout? Do you want to get into the shape of your life and become mentally stronger at the same time? As a martial artist of thirteen years, I can attest to the fact that martial arts has conditioned both my mind and body significantly. Here are the top 5 reasons to consider making martial arts part of your workout regimen.

1. You will become more flexible.

How often would you say that you stretch before your workout? If you're like most people, probably not enough. Most martial arts classes that you will take, regardless of the style, will place a heavy emphasis on stretching at the beginning of the session. No matter what your level of flexibility is currently, whether you struggle to touch your toes to being able to go into a full split, you will find yourself becoming looser and able to move quicker. Also, you will learn a variety of stretches that will reduce your risk of injury for any workout you do.

2. You will learn discipline.

At the core of every form of martial arts is discipline. This means developing a work ethic to continue training, even when it gets difficult, and maintaining moderation. True martial artists are the prime examples of health, as they limit their intake of physical and mental imperatives, such as junk food and alcohol. We always hear about implementing a healthy diet with a consistent workout routine, but it is nearly unfeasible without the discipline to do so.

3. You will strengthen your mind.

Along with the discipline that comes with martial arts, so too does a stronger mind. While martial artists are known for their physicality, they are also regularly tested mentally. I cannot recall all of the times that I've felt like I wanted to give up. Martial arts has taught me that, no matter how many times you get knocked on your ass, or get the wind knocked out of you, you have to pull yourself up and keep working. This helps with all aspects of life and will augment your success.

4. You will lose weight.

There are many instances where I have seen people completely transformed after taking classes for a few months (consistently, of course). After an intense warm-up I ran during one of our Taekwondo Club practices, one of my members told me that, since he started training with the club this past summer, he has over twenty pounds. When you join a martial arts class and stick with it, I guarantee that you will see results.

5. It's a lot of fun!

Above all else, martial arts is a fun alternative to your typical workout. For the longest time, I didn't care for the gym too much. Lifting weights and running on a treadmill wasn't as thrilling as getting to kick and punch things. Martial arts is also highly social. I have met a lot of my good friends through different studios and clubs I have been a part of over the years.

As you consider how you're going to make your "get more active" New Year's Resolution accomplished after the gluttony of the holidays have passed, consider picking up a martial arts class, or joining a club. Stick with it and I can assure you that you will become more fit, strong-willed, and healthier overall.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
