Prom season is right around the corner, and any girl who is going wants to make it the most perfect night ever. You have the dress, the shoes, the look all picked out, and your date all set- now it's just a matter of time and preparation. For those last-minute things you'll most likely forget, or for the things I wish I knew for my own prom, here are the tips that will make your prom night one to remember.
1. Bring Back-Up for Your Feet
It's no surprise that your feet are going to hurt at some point of the night regardless if you're wearing heels or flats. Make sure you bring a pair of socks or flip-flops onto the limo or party bus so you can keep them handy for later; and make sure you label them as yours so no one else can take your fabulous back-up shoes!
2. Designate a Personal Photographer
One of the most important parts of prom is the pictures that you're going to remember forever. In order to get all the shots you want, designate someone who isn't going to the big bash as your personal photographer. Whether it be your mom, your sibling or a friend, have them follow you around with their phone or a camera of their own to take candids and posed pics with your friends and family before you leave. Even when you're not focusing on the big picture, they will be.
3. Grab a Little of Everything for Your Plate
No matter what kind of event it is, everyone is apprehensive about what to choose to put on their plate. If you're prom is a buffet-style, don't be afraid to grab a little bit of everything to eat, whether it's cocktail hour or the main course. It is impossible that you're going to gain a pound or two from one dinner or that it will show in a matter of hours; let this be your one night of splurging (and well-deserved if you went on that prom diet).
4. Two Pictures Are Better Than One
This one is more of a personal opinion, but it is nevertheless important to at least think about. The classic prom photo is the one where you and your date are positioned side-by-side against some sort of backdrop, but why can't there be one of just you? I had the option at my prom to take one of these pictures by myself and with my date, and so I did both; if you can even suggest this to your planning committee or the photographer in the moment, it will be so nice to just have that glam portrait of yourself. Thank me later for this one.
5. Your Purse Also Needs to Be Your Emergency Kit
This is a no-brainer for the girls who always carry one of these around. In order to make this night the best it can be- and to prepare for the unexpected- make a list of what to pack in your purse the night before prom so you won't forget anything. There are tons of lists on specifically what to bring in magazines and online websites, so do your research so you make sure you're filling up the compact space with stuff you'll actually need (and yes, this should include fashion emergency supplies and a portable phone charger).
6. Get A LOT of Rest the Night Before
This is a no-brainer, but it could be easily forgotten for any high school student. In order to have a night to remember, you need the proper rest so you can look and feel your best. Make sure to get at least 7-8 hours, and try not to let late-night timeline scrolling or Netflix-binging tempt you.
7. Be Honest with Your Hairdresser/Makeup Artist
If you're as prepared as I was, you already have had a makeup and hair trial for the big night so you and your artists better understand each other and you'll know what you want in advance. Regardless if you did this or not, make sure to let them know you're not loving whatever they're doing the second you start having doubts because this is your night and you'll be looking back at these pictures for the rest of your life. As the saying goes, "Honesty is the best policy."
8. Don't Let Your Phone Distract You
Although some people are good with this, it's still important to note the 2018 level of phone usage. You're probably going to be too busy focusing on how you look and spending time with your friends that you'll completely forget about what is going on on social media. Save the snap stories and Instagram scrolling for when the night is over and you can look back at all the fun you had. Besides taking pics, put that phone down!
9. Make a Playlist for the Limo/Bus
It is so important that your limo or party bus has the best jams to hype you up for the big night and to keep the party going when it's over; you can maybe even make your own getting-ready playlist for when you're getting the hair and make-up done, too. Have someone with universally good music taste make a playlist or be in charge of the aux, because you deserve only the best songs.
10. Don't Stress, Just Dance
The biggest thing that most people forget is that prom is meant to be a night of fun. Yes, prom comes with a lot of pressure to look your best and impress everyone around you, but it's super important that you actually have fun so you can look back and think of the good time you had with your friends. And if you aren't a dancer (like me), force yourself onto the dance floor anyways, because you'll be thankful you did later on.
