Today I heard one adult threaten another adult with, “You’re too old for that.”
And that just made me laugh.
Because what does that even mean anyway?
I think it’s hilarious when people laugh during a really serious moment. That giggling that just won’t stop because it needs to stop. You know the one I’m talking about. You’re in the movie theatre or a lecture hall and something happens, it’s really not that funny, but the laughter just cannot be stopped. That’s fantastic.
Sometimes when I’m supposed to be doing homework; instead, I look at pictures of dogs wearing pantyhose. I don’t even feel ashamed about how stupidly entertained I am. Seriously, please do yourself a favor and look that up. Great stuff I promise.
Some days my friends and I go into public restrooms and enter stalls beside one another. We wait with much anticipation for our victim to walk into the bathroom whomever it may be. Once this stranger has joined us we begin making horrendous farting noises. Sometimes we even converse with one another with, “Hey, good one,” or, “You alright in there, bud?” That’s one of the best parts of my day, no doubt about it.
Last week I was laughing so hard in the middle of campus that I literally had to lay down right there on the sidewalk because I couldn’t breathe. A man then came out of a nearby building, concerned over bodies on the ground, and asked in great concern if he should call 911.
The way I see it, you can look at these things in two different ways:
It is childish and ignorant and immature.
Or, it’s the things that get me through my day.
And I prefer to claim the latter.
Because life is just boring sometimes, and it’s suffocating.
Sometimes I wake up and shovel some bland cereal in my face, I bounce about my day from one thing to the next, and before I know it I’m back in bed just hoping and praying for seven hours of sleep.
What do I have to show for any of it?
So tonight when I reflect on my day, my only goal is to be shocked with the absurdity. Seriously, that’s the stuff I’ll be laughing about for years. I won’t remember that day I was perfectly behaved and everything ran smoothly. No, I’ll remember the days that went so wrong all I could do was laugh.
And that’s fine.
Embrace the weird days, the crazy people, and the insane circumstances you find yourself in: and make them your very own.
The day you become “too old for that" is the day, well, what kind of a day is that?
