To The Woman That Welcomed Me Into Meijer
Lori Oxford

As I entered Meijer yesterday, I was welcomed by the sweetest woman. At the time I was still wearing my Live Like Lucas t-shirt with my race tag, due to having participated in the Live Like Lucas 5k earlier in the day.

"Oh! Were you in a race today, Miss?" The woman greeted me.

"Hello! Yes, I participated in a 5k today in memory of my dear friend that passed," I explained.

"I think that is so brave of you-," she began, then stopped to greet the next shopper.

"Hello, Welcome! Ma'am, how cool is this... This young girl just finished a race in memory of her friend that had passed. That takes so much emotional strength. I am so proud of her ability to persevere."

The woman agreed in awe, and went on to shop.

"This is all so sweet of you to say... It truly means so much that you are taking your time to greet me with such open arms. I am speechless," I exclaimed.

"Your friend is smiling down on you today, forever, and always. You are a blessing."

"I hope he is. Thank you again for all of your kind words. I am entirely flattered. Have a wonderful day."

We parted with sparkles in our eyes. Mine were happy tears, but she had a genuine sparkle to her eye. She has proven to me that one step out of the way and a few kind words can mean so very much. Although, she went above and beyond saying a few words. I felt as if I knew her, or that I was supposed to. In that moment I knew that there was still some faith in humanity.

For such a long time, I felt as if I was the only one daring to love each and every person I met. I say what is on my heart and do not fear what others think of me. I'd rather be known for giving too much than too little. Love is all that I know. Not in a romantic form whatsoever, but in an appreciative form. I like to acknowledge others' hard work, support them, create smiles and laughs, make everyone feel important, and most of all, even if I am the only one that comes to mind, I want everyone to know that there is always someone you can reach out to.

So to the woman that welcomed me into Meijer, thank you; thank you for catching my heart's attention. Thank you for reminding me that there is beauty in spreading love. Despite the fear and unknown, the good will continue to outweigh the bad.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
