An Open Letter To The Super Mom
Kinsey Roberts

Mother’s Day is approaching quite quickly and this will be the first Mother’s Day not spent at home with my mom. I’m sad that I’m not able to spend Mother’s Day with her. So, I’m writing this as a surprise to her as I know she will see it and read it... so here’s to you, mom.

To My Super Mom,

Thank you. Thank you for everything you have done, always do, and will do for me. Thank you for all the lessons you have taught me.

Thank you for teaching me all the things that you have meant to taught me. Thank you for teaching me all the things that you didn’t think you taught me. Thank you for everything that you do for Kaylee and I.

Thank you for making me go to swim lessons EVERY. SINGLE. SUMMER. even though I never made it past the first two levels during any given summer. You wanted me to learn how to swim, and I'm sorry that I still don’t know how to do more than doggy-paddle. I tried so hard during those swim lessons but I’m just not that big of a fan of going in the water.

Thank you for all biddy league sports teams that you coached for me and for taking me and sitting through all those practices and games. From coaching my biddy league volleyball team, to taking me to dance lessons, gymnastics, soccer, softball, and basketball practices and games. You never complained. You let me do all the sports that I wanted to do.

Thank you for teaching me how to be brave and fearless which sometimes made you nervous like the one time I told my basketball coach that I was fine to play with a broken finger. I remember the look on your face when you saw me out on the court playing with my finger in the splint.

Thank you for being my Girl Scout leader for many, many years. I know it probably wasn’t easy doing it, but you did it without complaining. I may be a little biased but I think you were a rockin’ troop leader.

Thank you for always being at all of my school events no matter how small the event was. You were there for all the talent shows, field days, being apart of the PTO even when I was in middle school, and so much more.

Thank you for showing me what dedication looks like by going back to school while raising two young girls on your own. You showed me that situations are what you make of it and if you really want something that you will accomplish it! Thank you for never letting me put my education on the back burner to anything else.

The countless late nights studying with me to you humoring me when I was convinced that I needed tutoring for a math class because I had an A- one quarter. You encouraged me to challenge myself but I know I worried you when I came home my freshman year to tell you that I would be taking two math classes during my sophomore year so I could take Calculus my senior year (I doubled up on math but didn’t want to take Calc my senior year, oh well!). My education was always a big deal in our house and you made sure that my education was always my main focus.

Thank you for teaching me that losing a race or not making the team didn't define me, but how I react to it is what defines who I am. You would let me be upset for a little bit and then you would help me figure out what I needed to do next. You always have solutions for whatever is going on in my life and you are always there to help me.

Thank you for driving me to the countless activities I was in and sitting in the car while I was in the meetings. In high school, I was in countless clubs and organizations and I didn’t like driving (I still don’t!) so my mom would take me to every meeting, sometimes multiple meetings in one day. Thank you for taking me to school every day, I know this seems super small but it honestly meant so much to me because I highly disliked riding the bus.

Thank you for encouraging me to apply to the colleges I wanted to go to and for taking me on my first college visit when I was a freshman in high school. You thought I was a little young to be worried about college visits but you took me anyway (Mom, I still think it’s funny that even though we went on all those college visits I’m going to the last university that we visited)!

Thank you for not discouraging me from going to school so far from home. I know it had to be hard for you to watch your baby (I’m the youngest) and favorite daughter (sorry, Kaylee) move so far from home to attend college.

Thank you for encouraging me to follow my dreams and making sure that I'm realistic in what I want to do after I graduate (which means that my dream of being a fashion designer isn't realistic). I literally want to do everything and I'm interested in so many things but you keep me grounded in my dreams as I keep dreaming of the things that I want to do with my life.

Thank you for teaching me how to always do what is right. It’s a tough world we live in and you have taught me that I need to always do what is right, no matter what everyone else is doing. Thank you for teaching me how to be kind.

Thank you for teaching me how to be a friend to everyone. Everyone needs a friend and you have taught me to be friendly to everyone which has led me to not really know a stranger because I talk to everyone. I guess I'm just like you in this aspect because you don't know a stranger and I'm convinced that what would be a 30-minute shopping trip turns into 3 hours because my mom literally talks to everyone.

Thank you for teaching me that hard work gets you everywhere in life. You have never slacked off in life and I know dang well that you will never let me slack off either if I ever tried. Thank you for teaching me how to have faith.

Thank you for teaching me that I have to keep trying no matter what. Thank you for teaching me how to be humble. Whenever I'm proud of something, I usually call you and I know I brag about whatever I accomplished.

You let me brag for literally 5 seconds and then you are giving me pointers on how I can improve for next time. You never let me get cocky about anything because as soon as I do, you are giving me a million different tips on how I can improve for next time. An example of this would be when my first article was published and I was so excited (and kind of bragging about it).

You started to tell me how I could improve for my next article and why I needed to make those changes. I know that you just want me to constantly be improving myself and that I don't need to brag because I can always do better. Thank you for teaching me everything that you know.

Without any of these lessons that you have taught me, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish half of what I have accomplished so far in my life.

Mom, you are truly a super mom. I don’t know how you do everything that you do for me. Thank you for working two jobs so that I’m able to fully enjoy all the aspects of college life.

You let me enjoy my college education by taking care of everything I need while in college. Thank you for being my biggest cheerleader. Thank you for being the one person I know I can always count on.

Thank you for believing in me when I don't believe in myself. Thank you for showing me the way when I'm lost. Thank you for raising me to be your daughter.

You have always put Kaylee and I first, which I know could have probably been tough.Thank you from the bottom of my heart because you have done absolutely everything you could do for me and I know that you will continue to do whatever you can for me.I know that wherever life takes me that you will be just a phone call away.

As I was growing up, I would always say that I would never be like my mom but oh how wrong I was. I will be speaking and phrases and words that you say will just slip out of my mouth. As I go about my day, a million different thoughts cross my head that I know my mom has said before.

I start to laugh because I’m slowly turning into you...which I don’t think is so bad. So Mom on this Mother’s Day, I want to thank you for everything and for raising me to be like you.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
