Why Your Next Pet Should Be A Rescue Pet

My family adopted a kitten after she was thrown out of a moving vehicle into the lake.

Why Your Next Pet Should Be A Rescue Pet

About a month ago, my local humane society posted a video of the cutest kitten on their Facebook page. This gray and white kitty was playing so jovially, and she had the sweetest little face. When I initially found the video, I could not stop replaying it; the playful kitten filled my entire heart with warmth and joy. All of my family members that watched the video also fell in love with her, as well as all of the Facebook users who viewed the video because the comments, likes, and shares were all increasing by the minute.

The story about this little kitten is heart-wrenching. The humane society posted, along with the video, that the kitten was rescued by fishermen who just happened to be out on the lake when they witnessed the kitten be thrown from a moving vehicle into the water. The fishermen hurried over to the frantic kitten who, after tumbling down some rocks, was now disoriented in the cold lake water. They retrieved the kitten and brought her into the humane society. For a couple weeks, the kitten was monitored because her teeny-tiny nose would not stop bleeding. After running tests to monitor the kitten's health, she was miraculously fine and ready to be adopted. My family filled out an adoption application, and we were the first to be called.

Our sweet kitten adjusted to her new home very quickly. She gets along with our two other family cats, lets anyone hold her, uses the litter box easily, cuddles all of the time, and plays with her toys. The little cat never had a problem growing acclimated to our home, even after the trauma that she endured. Every time that she lays on my chest, purring loudly, I wonder how anyone could even think about throwing this innocent creature out of a moving vehicle and into the water. Her chance of survival was slim to none; if those fishermen had not been at the right place at the right time, then she would have drowned.

I am astounded that my cute kitten was treated in such a horrendous manner, and I am especially thankful that she was not only rescued by the fishermen, but also that my family was able to adopt her and provide a home full of love and care. After this experience, I have a newfound respect the people who rescue animals and are able to give them a happy life despite the level of trauma they have previously been forced through. Animals do not deserve to be harmed, under any circumstance. They are living creatures that inhabit the same environment that we do, and we should do our best, as humans, to create a safe, healthy place for animals to thrive in.

To the person that threw my kitten out of their moving vehicle and into the lake: I am utterly disgusted with your behavior. How did you ever think that this would be a good idea? It is understandable if you could not take care of the kitten, but that does not give you the right to dispose of the animal in a cruel way. You could have taken the kitten straight to the humane society or given her to a friend. If all else fails, just let her go into nature...this is not an ideal way to rid yourself of a cat, but at least it is better than throwing her out of a moving vehicle into a large body of water.

To the fishermen that rescued my kitten from the lake: you are saints. Thank you for being the only hope that my little cat had for survival. Thank you for paying such close attention to details that you witnessed this terrible event occur and realized what had happened. Thank you for stopping what you were originally doing to go save the life of this innocent creature.

To my family: thank you for being so willing to bring a new pet into our home. As nerve-wracking as it was to add a kitten to a home already comprised of two parents, two teenagers, two grown cats, and one dog, I am glad that we followed through with this decision. Our new little cat fits right in with the positive chemistry that flows through our home.

To my kitten: words cannot completely express how grateful I am that you are now safe and in my life. I am sorry that you were not treated properly before, and it makes me sick just thinking about it. I can ensure you that you will have nothing to worry about from here on out; you are incredibly loved by everyone in our family. I am so lucky to have the privilege of having the sweetest kitten as my pet.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
