Yes. Yes, I know an "open letter" this can't be good.
Many kids, when deciding on a college to attend, immediately weed out any out-of-state schools because they have varying negative assumptions with what would happen if they attended somewhere the slightest bit out of their comfort zone. Little do they know, this is how we grow. You have to take yourself out of your comfort zone and try out something new.
The first reason for skepticism in a new school, or even a new state can be "how will I find friends?" Well, good thing for you: your college most likely has thought out many fun, creative ways to get each student involved and meeting new people as quickly as possible. Some of these events may be joining a sorority or fraternity, or perhaps a clubs around campus, or even joining a youth group in the church. The possibilities are endless. Therefore you have no reason to worry about how you'll be able to meet many new faces and make lots of new friends.
Becoming accustomed to your new college town and state can be difficult, but I'm sure you will become addicted to some of the food that only that city has. For me I was scared to death when I came to Starkville and they had such a small (or what I thought was small) array of restaurants. I soon found, City Bagel, Bulldog Burger and Local Culture; Oh, it would never be the same without those three. Also, Mississippi introduced me to some of the best crawfish boils around, and now it's something I look forward to every spring. So don't you doubt for one second that your college town may not have good food, because even if you don't find it right away, trust me your restaurant is there somewhere hiding, just waiting for you to find it.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, I'm sure that you're scared to leave home and fear that you might actually miss you parents or your pets. But have no fear because there's this incredible application called Skype and it's perfect for those nights that you might be missing you mom just a little too much. And if you're lucky maybe she'll even put your dog on the screen just for a split second. Another helpful tip can be to find your local pet shelter, or pet shop and go visit every time you miss your dog or cat. I know it's not the same, obviously, but I know it will help to hold you over until the next time you'll see your beloved pet.
I say all of this because I don't want people to completely disregard the option of going to an out-of-state school. In the end it can truly help to change you in a good way, and you could meet some of the greatest people you'll ever know. Also going to a brand new state gives you a whole new fresh start with thousands of people who don't care about the petty drama of high school. So take that opportunity and run with it. Don't think for one second that you can't go to an out of state school. You have to believe in yourself and know that you can do it. Don't worry. In the end it'll be great and you'll be so glad you did it!
