To The Generation of (hopeful) Change,
One thing that we as humans tend to find similarity in is the fact that with age, dreams either diminish or turn into something that we may prioritize for a life time. The dreams most children have of becoming a doctor, an astronaut, some sort of world-saving hero seem to turn into sub-dreams with time. “Reality” hits and by reality, I mean the world. Hard news, loss of lives, seeing other people’s lives and visions falling right through their hands will create a tinge of doubt where courage has held its own. Some of these children will be lucky enough to reach their life goals of being doctors, or running their own businesses. Others may work just as hard but find themselves with complications whether they be difficulties of mind or of matter, they chain you down with the thought of your goal being so close but seemingly forever out of reach. No matter what that hardship is that keeps scaring away the hope every person needs to keep us living, and not only surviving, if one person can reach their golden prize, why shouldn’t the next? I like to hope that our generation is the one that will contribute in allowing children to reach the dreams they had as kids.
My brother likes to jokingly say that I’m ‘P.C.’. As in politically correct… I really don’t think I understand that term well. I’m not sure if it is constantly used in a wrong way, but it is always in a negative way. “The world is turning too P.C.” When I hear this term, it’s usually following a talk about feminism or racism. As a feminist I hear the term ‘politically correct’ in a way I believe many use the term feminist. I personally do not think all men should burn, and that women should take over the world. Actually the opposite; that women and men should be of total equality. When somebody tells me that feminism is not needed, it is like saying the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter’ shouldn’t be as prominently important as it is right now. I have heard both, as many white people are generalized as racist, and all cops have been generalized as bad. At the year 2016, I find it so surprising that we treat races, religions, sexual orientation, careers, and so much more as cliques in one of those typical high school movies. By saying thing, I am not saying there are not cops that should NOT be permitted to even hold a gun, and white people thinking they are superior for a reason that I could never fathom. However, to be the generation that ends the massacres due to difference in physical appearance and personal beliefs, our society needs to learn from the losses, and change.
Social media has been able to do so much bad for the world, just as it has done so much good. Cyber bullying turned into being capable of using social platforms to be able to share correct and important news to and from the Middle East. With hashtags such as #blacklivesmatter and #lgbt, we are able to spread so much news that could otherwise go unnoticed. On June 26 of just last year the U.S. Supreme court made it legal for same sex marriage all across America. I like to believe that was one of the biggest steps our country has made in a long time, and others like to belittle it to people just trying to be ‘politically correct’. The many ways of communication today has shared our ways of being able to speak our personal thoughts and ideas. I like to hope that our generation can really learn to use this to benefit the generation that follow us, and not only leave them with the ruins of a society that could have succeeded in so much. We need to use our means of sharing with the world to share that of beauty, equality, and hope.
The children of today’s “underdogs” need to be able to succeed for our country, and world to benefit. The parents that are working hard to take care of a family that is being targeted for their skin color or beliefs will not be able to give their children the education and life that could give them so much more to help us, as a full society, to grow and thrive. Just as those children are facing a world that can be so harsh to anybody, for the most petty and even inexistent reasons. For them to save the world, we need to give them the equal abilities and advantages to. The lives that are being taken and ruined by those who are single-minded, could have been the exact lives that do something to save our world, even if only a little bit. Whether many are ignorant, or we are just pushing what we fear under the same metaphorical rug covering the bodies of the lives that have been stolen from those undeserving, our country, and world need all the saving we can get. We need change and we need to stop allowing people to mold our minds into what they please. Use social media to share what you and hopefully many others believe need to hear, not to allow yourself to be brainwashed into supporting those providing short cuts and cheats. Those who are letting these single-minded people receive these benefits and shortcuts that they do not deserve are only holding back the fight that needs to occur for a real change to be seen.
As the generation that has some sort of social media at the tips of their fingers, use it for the right reasons. Use social media, instead of the violent riots in the streets that are only causing more loss of lives that only want a change. Take your voice to the right places, and allow yourself to be heard and not shrugged off. When the majority can actually come together on an online platform, we will not allow those who are trying to speak for us be heard.
Thank you for listening to my thoughts.
