To Our Future Selves

Did you achieve all of the dreams that we had when we were young?

To Our Future Selves

To our future selves,

We hope that everything we wished for you came true. Yes, we wanted success and the perfect career, but above all else, we hope that you’re truly happy. We wonder what you’ll be like. At this point in our lives, we can’t imagine much after graduation. Our lives are like clay being molded in hands that are not our own. We have oblivion to look forward to. It scares us at times, but we embrace it and try not to worry about the things that we can’t control.

We wonder what all you’ve accomplished in our lives. Did you actually go on to join the Peace Corps. like we dreamed of, did you ever write that book that we’ve been slowly piecing together since we were 12, did you ever find someone to love and spend the rest of our lives with?

These are all the things we wonder about, but all things that we hope you’ve lived. We always said we would travel around the world and go to all of the places that we’ve only seen in photos and make memories of own. We said we would have a wall covered from end to end with books. We said we would make it a tradition to always watch Sunday afternoon football all wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket, even if it was just by ourselves, like we did growing up. We hope you do all of these things and so much more.

We wonder what your sense of style is now because we know you’re looking back at old photos wondering why we ever left the house looking like we did, but keep in mind, that it was who you were at the time and that’s all that matters. We hope that we live every moment of everyday to its fullest, so that when you look back on our lives you take pride in knowing why we had ear to ear smiles in every photo we took.

But remember that we’re still sitting here dreaming about what our lives will be like when we “grow up,” when we are you. Don’t let us down. Yes, right now we may be considered young and dumb and looked at as if we have the world at our finger tips. You’re still the crazy hipster you were in college just with a little bit more money and a place of your own. Don’t forget to let yourself be young and dumb every now and then. Life is too short to take everything so seriously. So laugh, buy yourself those tickets to that basketball game you’ve been dying to go to and give in to going to see that band we used to love. And last, but not least, if you haven’t found everything we’ve been looking for in life, don’t give up. There’s always another adventure right around the bend.

So here’s to our future selves, we hope that you never once settled for “good enough” and always went for greatness. We hope that you found the love of our lives and if you haven’t try to put yourself out there (even though that was never our thing). And, lastly, never stop chasing our dreams, no matter how old you are.

Sincerely,

You as The Wallflowers

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
