Yes, I am an 18-year-old that has a five-year-old best friend. Yes, he is a better friend than most of my peers. Yes, it is quite interesting and fun. No, I would not trade my best friend for anything in this. Yes, he is my nephew.
The hardest thing I have had to do is explain how I could possibly be best friends with someone so much younger than me. I guess those people should get some amazing friends like I have.
However, being best friends with my very young nephew has taught me a lot of valuable lessons in life. He has taught me patience and love. I have learned more about life when talking to him. He is someone I look up, even if I have 13 years of experience on him. He showed me the true meaning of hope. In some ways, I believe he is smarter and wiser than me.
When I am questioning life or feeling down, I can have a simple, but a heart-filled conversation with him and get answers. He will be brutally honest with me like any true best friend would be. He will not let me drown my sorrows in ice cream (sadly). Having a best friend that is only five years old is amazing because to them, life is not as stressful or chaotic, so their responses are innocent and simple.
I am so thankful to have him as a best friend because my life has not been the dame since June 27th, 2012 when he was born. I have learned that life is not always so complicated.
Life is about abstract drawings, wacky snacks, and humorous movies.
Life is about laughing until you almost pee your pants.
Life is about being who you want to be, and always being a little kid at heart.
I would not have realized any of this without the help of my best friend, Brycen.
