A Letter To My Little Sister

The 10-year difference between us has not changed our sisterly bond.

A Letter To My Little Sister
Julia Trout

Being a middle child has its pros and cons. Not only do I have an older brother looking over me, but I have the opportunity to look over my little sister. Though we may not always see eye to eye with everything, I would turn this world upside down for you any day. So, little sister, listen up.

1. Listen to Dad

I know he can be a bit of a pest sometimes (sorry Dad, still love you), but what he says is only meant to make you grow as a person. As many times as he’ll tell you to clean your room or to sit down and complete your homework, he does it for your own good. Dad is your first love and will be a man that will never let you down. He cares about you more than you will ever believe and will continue to pick you up when times are tough. Regardless of how often he gets on your nerves, know that it is because he loves you to the moon and back.

2. Be yourself

At your age, change is always happening. One day your favorite food is mac and cheese and a week later, you say you hate it. Trust me, I know what it's like to be your age. But no matter what, be who you want to be, like what you want to like and never be scared to try something new. Wanna dye your hair purple? Do it (but ask Dad first!) You are only a kid once and now is the time to experiment and discover who you truly want to be. Never let the opinions and thoughts of others prevent you from being you. Can you promise me that?

3. Always follow your dreams

You tell me now that you want to become a dentist, so do it! Because crazily enough, at your age I said that I wanted to become a nurse and that is exactly what I went to college for. My plans might have changed once I got to school, but at least I gave my dream a chance. Some people will support your dreams, and some won’t. My advice to you is that you only listen to the ones who are there for you and your future. Never let the negative people bring you down. You can do whatever you set your mind to, and don't ever forget that!

4. Embrace the moment

You and I both know way too well that anything can happen in the blink of an eye, good or bad. With that being said, cherish every second. Cherish the great time spent with family, the time spent learning at school and the time with friends. Never forget to say "I love you" to people you love, even if you are struggling to like that person at that moment. Life can change too quickly, so cling to every moment.

5. Remember, boys are gross

It better not be until you're thirty, but there will come a time when a special boy will appear in your life. Kick him out immediately! I am joking, of course. But always be cautious about who you invite in. Boys can be a bit crazy, but one day you will come across your Prince Charming! Until then, let every boy know that I will kick his butt if he tries to hurt my baby sister!

6. Know that I am always here for you

Even though there is a 10-year age difference between us, that doesn't change that we are sisters. You have always been my mini-me and will continue to be for the years to come. No matter the situation or the time of day, I am always down the hall from you. And even if I am not there physically, you can always call. I cant wait to continue to watch you grow into a beautiful young woman. I love you endlessly.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
