To My High School Friends As We Head To College

Dear High School Friends,

It's crazy how after four years of what was supposed to be one of "the greatest time of our lives" it is actually over. There are just a few things to say before our final goodbye... a goodbye that might last only a couple of weeks or even a lifetime.

So, I want you to hear me when I say, "Thank you."

Thank you for everything you have taught me throughout high school. Whether it was what to wear for Friday night football games or how to use some equation that I will never use in real life, thank you for that. Thanks for all of the help on the homework that you knew I would never get done on my own because I stay up until 1 a.m...binge-watching Netflix.

Thank you for the thousands of memories we have created. We have been through hell and back together. We've shed so many tears, both good and bad. The laughing until we cried kind of tears were some of my favorite memories, but I'm also thankful for the tears during the fights that only made our friendships stronger.

Thank YOU for everything you have done for me.

Also, hear me when I say, "I'm still here for you."

Even though we won't see each other every day, for five days a week, I will be here for you. Don't hesitate to call or text me, especially in a time of need. We know a lot about each other and about how to help one another through our lows.

Knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses are just one of the reasons we were friends for four years.

I was there for you whenever you needed me to be. That isn't going to change because we won't see each other for seven hours five days of the week.

Please don't hesitate to keep in touch.

Some people aren't as fortunate with friendships in college because they have to move so far away from each other. We definitely got lucky in this aspect of college because I know you'll be just around the corner and ready to open your door to me at any time. But no matter what the situation, PLEASE keep in touch.

I know that hearing updates on how you've been doing and what you've been up to will put a smile on my face. Getting a FaceTime call, or even just a simple text, would be lovely. We were friends for such a long time, I don't want to loose that connection.

I wish you the best of luck.

You all have such a bright future. It might be enlisting in the military, sports, college or even a BA career. I want to wish you all the best of luck with those things as we close this door and open a new one.

I can't wait to see all of the dreams that you will achieve, the goals that you will accomplish and the new adventures you'll eventually take on in the new part of your life. You can and will succeed.

It's extremely hard to say this last part: goodbye.

To those of you that won't take the effort to try to keep the friendship we have, I would like to say that it's been nice knowing you. Through thick and thin, I still wish you the best of luck as well.

Sincerely,

One of Your High School Friends

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
