An Open Letter To My Older Sister

I'm lucky to have a best friend like you.

An Open Letter To My Older Sister
Kelsey Simeone

Sister (n): a person who’s been where you’ve been; someone you can call when things aren’t going right; is more than just family; a sister is a forever friend.

I have read so many posts online about girls writing about their older sister being so great and their best friend. Sorry to be so cliché (and unoriginal), but I never write any sweet or sappy messages like you do in birthday cards. If I’m being honest with you, I actually love when you write something sweet to me. No matter how much we disagree, we can always agree on one thing: At the end of the day, we’ll always be best friends.

Moving away from home this year (and now being four hours from you) has shown me how much our relationship means to me. I’m so grateful to have you as my go-to, and, more importantly, as my sister. For all of the times I never told you how much you mean to me, here’s five reasons why I love having you as my big sister:

1. You always make me laugh.

When I’m upset or anxious about something, you’re the first person I call. You have such a dry sense of humor and you always have an awkward story to share. Even if it’s only for 20 minutes, you always take my mind off my worries. We laugh about the dumbest things (Little Caesar reviews, apple fritters, and Sandy Forks) but at the same time, they’re the funniest.

2. We always team up on mom and dad together.

Over break, we started mom and dad’s favorite chant “your rules suck”. Even though we love them, it’s always fun to team up against them. We always joke about annoying them, and between the two of us, we always succeed.

3. You plan sister days for us.

I hate that you’re a “real adult” and have a real job now because that means less time spent together. On your days off, I secretly love that you plan sister days for us so we can catch up. Even if that means being your navigator, the car DJ and listening to you complain, spending time with you is worth it.

4. You inspire me.

Who goes through nursing school, starts their masters and lands a full time job before they even graduate?! Your hard work and color coded notes has taken you so far. Your desire to help others, your ambition, and your caring personality is so inspiring; you’re my role model.

5. We balance each other out.

It’s pretty obvious who’s the type A one here (not to point any fingers, but it’s you)! You love being in charge and are not laid back at all. You can never go with the flow, but since we’re opposites in that way, we balance each other out. We don’t have the same personality type, but our differences strengthen our relationship.

No matter how far apart we are, I can always count on you. Despite our disagreements and differences, we always laugh it off and get along within a half hour. You love me endlessly regardless of my flaws, and I know you’ll always be on my side. You’re the most beautiful person I know, inside and out, and our relationship means the world to me. I love you to the moon and back.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
