Dear best friend,
I'm writing this to say how excited I am that you finally turn twenty-one and can soon rent a car in some states.
I am obviously also pretty thrilled that you can now help me get drunk on random Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Twenty-one is a big year, and not just because you're finally allowed to buy a drink, but because it's a stepping stone into the real world, the world we have been dreaming of being a part of since we were two sixteen-year-olds in high school. Now, you're only a few short weeks away from this reality, and my heart is beyond full of emotions for you. I am proud of the person you have molded yourself into in these past few years, and I know that you will do wonderful things in the years to come. Your twenty-first birthday is going to be a celebration of you, your accomplishments, and all good things which you bring with you no matter where you go. Not only that, but I want you to drink and celebrate to you graduating college this upcoming year, and I will even be okay with you bragging about how you managed to graduate a year before me. I know you might be terrified of the world because in the past it has hurt you, but I just want to let you know that you shouldn't be. Best friend, let the world be terrified of YOU, and of everything you have accomplished and will accomplish. Your twenty-first birthday is a gentle reminder that you have made it this far for a reason, that you fought and fought against all odds and obstacles which life managed to throw your way, and here you are, about to stand proud and take your first legal drink. This is a big deal, and I want you to enjoy it.
To my best friend as you turn twenty-one, know how happy I am to have met you, and been by your side throughout these years. Even though we are miles apart, I know that our friendship will never fade and that I can count on you no matter what, and the other way around. As you turn twenty-one don't let there be a shadow of doubt in your mind that you are anything but extraordinary, embrace the burning light within yourself and burn as bright as the heavens will let you. Take this upcoming year of your life, and let it guide you towards success. I know you will make your family proud, your friends proud, and most importantly, yourself. Never forget that no matter where you are and what you are doing, you should always put yourself first, and do what makes YOU happy.
To my best friend as you turn twenty-one, lift up that glass, and cheer to the greatness to come. This is your year, and you're more than ready to make the most of it.
Sincerely,
Your slightly younger best friend.
