In honor of my dad's recent birthday and Father's Day, my gift to him is an open letter.
Dear Dad,
Thanks for all the jokes--corny or raunchy. At times I may seem like I'm annoyed, but you need an audience so I have to give a reaction. You are my saving grace when you make extra coffee in the morning, and sometimes are the reason why I'm laughing until I can't breathe. You always have great advice to give on how to live life; careless but not too careless. You're a role model for how successful you are, and I could only hope to become half the person you are. Your motto is work hard, play hard.
I know we don't spend as much time together as I do with Mom, but I love every time that we get to do things with just the two of us: from going to the gym, to eating dinner at the Coney. I don't know where I would be without your support. Going to college, traveling, and so many other experiences wouldn't be possible without you. You make such an impact on my life in the smallest ways.
You are very generous and considerate of others, and you've taught me that life is too short to worry about the little things in life. Your work ethic is impeccable. Your unexpected wits make you the life of the party. Summer weekends at the lake wouldn't be the same without you as the captain driving everyone else around on the boat. You say that I shouldn't give up too easily because I'm a Pierson, whether it be a career choice or a passion. You give me the confidence I don't have in myself, and you've convinced me that the world is my oyster-- the sky is the limit. You've helped me realize that nothing will be handed to me on a silver platter because I have to work for what I earn.
I want to make you proud because I know you believe in me more than I believe in myself. I promise to take every piece of guidance, interpret it, and apply it to my life. I want to live life like you do: with a positive outlook and a smile on my face. I'm still working on not being as hard on myself, but with your help, I'm getting there. The love between you and Mom is indescribable, and I hope one day to find that happiness.
I'm glad we're both Spartans because it definitely gives us something to bond over that nobody else has. Thanks for making us an MSU household growing up because an MSU household is the best kind. I couldn't imagine how happy you were when I decided to apply to Michigan State instead of the University of Michigan, and it must've been more exciting when I got accepted. I always love hearing stories about you attending Michigan State years ago, and that certain things about East Lansing haven't changed. You working by East Lansing is a highlight because it makes home not feel so far away when we meet up during the week every now and then.
Long story short Dad, you're my superhero. I love you so much even if I don't show it sometimes.
Love,
Alaina
