An Open Letter To My Future Self

From me, to me.

Dear future self,

You are beautiful. You are strong. You can be anything you want to be. You can have anything you want to have. You can do anything you want to do. You can go anywhere you want to go. Dear future self, you are love, compassion, joy, unstoppable, unparalleled, bold, chic, intelligent, and confident. You are love.

These are a few of the things as a race of people we should tell our future selves. All of the miniature decisions you have made have helped to create what you have out of your life now. That also means every little fiber of your day, right this second, is creating your future. Every thought, every word, everything you say, every missed opportunity, and every action are creating your future.

Do you know how valuable life is? At this very second, you are the oldest you have ever been and the youngest you will ever be. Do you not know how many years you let slip by without taking all of the chances you could have taken? I know life is moving way too fast. Seems like yesterday you were trying on your mom's makeup or out in the yard playing football with your brothers.

It may seem like you have more good years behind you than in front of you. You are merely a wise being. Hold on to faith and a vibrant spirit. Take pride in everything you do.

Dear future self,

Be bold. Take this world by storm. You are the only you this world will ever see. No one will live exactly like you. No single person on this earth can ever hold you back from the destiny God has created for you but you. Stay humble, and stay one hundred percent true to yourself. If you are not happy, change it. Make your life your canvas. No matter what types of rocks life may be currently throwing at your face, stay strong and be of good courage. After all, diamonds are made under pressure.

Dear future self,

Love the skin you are in. It now may be getting old with some marks and scars. Your skin may even be saggy and your joints may be starting to hurt but you need to appreciate your value.

Don’t go through your whole life thinking negatively about yourself. If there is one thing on this earth the young me has found to be true: words create the space around you. I did an experiment for about one week. I took my tube of lipstick and I wrote nice things in the mirror about myself.

I listened to music that made was about self-empowerment and self-love. I ate healthier and took a walk in the mornings the cool crisp morning air. I also deleted negative people off of my social media sites and deactivated it for a few days. I was the happiest I had been in a long time. I meditated on God in the morning time and listened to Him speak. I was happy. I defied stereotypes. I was confident.

So future self,

Stop your self-pity and start getting up and making your day better. You may have missed great opportunities in the past, lost relationships, and have made some irreversible mistakes.

The past is the past and there is nothing you can do to change it. Earth gets older, and time is moving, you’re getting much older, and realizing life is not so long anymore. Get it together and stop crying over that silly boy who hurt you, stop dwelling on the fact you may have several jelly rolls, and the mistakes you have made and start putting the jewels on your crown princess.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
