The last week has been anything but easy for individuals in this country. When the results of the 2016 presidential election ended up shocking almost half of the country, it's no wonder that citizens everywhere took to Facebook to hash out their feelings on president-elect, Donald Trump.
Over the last few days, I've seen unlikely alliances form through social media as many times as I have seen friendships tested due to differences in political views. The passion felt by members of this country in regards to their political party has left a lasting impression on me and the rest of society.
However, this passion channeled through Facebook leaves me wondering; how powerful we millennials could be if we all used our passion for the election, and harnessed it into changing the world?
How different would the opinions on the outcome of the election be if our Facebook friends everywhere weren't drilling it into third-party voters that their vote didn't matter?
Your vote will be remembered, and it's inspiring that you believed strongly enough in your right to vote that you voted for who you believed in most (except those of you who voted for Harambe. Because, really, he's a gorilla) You are admired, for there will never be any change in the two-party candidate system without people like you.
How different would the feelings surrounding the election be if democratic supporters weren't convinced that all Trump supporters were racist and homophobic? While Trump's views on certain issues speak for themselves, democratic voters aren't any better than some of the names they're calling Trump supporters.
In a clip from the "Stephen Colbert Show," he tells viewers in an oddly powerful video how poisonous our politics have become, “We take a little bit of it so you can hate the other side. And it tastes kind of good, and you like how it feels, and there’s a gentle high to the condemnation."
Colbert also mentioned how terrified the Republican and Democratic Party members are of one another. Stating that the democrats are convinced the republicans are planning a government takedown, while the republicans fear the exact same thing out of the democrats. Isn't this concerning to you that our country is divided so evenly? We are one of the most powerful nations in the world, and we are sitting on the verge of civil unrest.
And so I ask you, disgruntled democrats, passionate Trump supporters, and die-hard third-party voters to ban together for the coming four years. I ask you to remain passionate about politics, and I ask you to keep the fire in your bellies lit. We're in for a long haul, and everyone should love thy neighbor.
