Have you ever read an amazing novel, and then wondered why the author failed to write anything else? Yeah, me, too…
How about an author who writes this amazing book, and doesn’t right another for like 50 years (cough cough)? To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those books. But to be truthful, I hate this novel, so you wouldn’t ever catch me pining over another book from this author. But you get where I’m coming from, right?
Here’s another real example: the novel, The Help, written by Katheryn Stockett. Remember this book? It was made into a movie, and had some of the highest paid actresses - you know, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, who won an Oscar for her portrayal in the movie. Ring any bells yet? Well yeah, that one! But, we’re talking about the book, and how she hasn’t written anything since 2009. The Help was a freaking master piece. It was one of those books that left you feeling like everything is right in the world. I couldn’t put it down. It was C’EST MAGNIFIQUE!!!! (fresh accent and all)
After having the most amazing experience since Harry Potter, the author doesn’t write anything else - like what the heck? I myself pine for great writing, and The Helphad that. Once you experience something like that, you can never really get over it. It’s not wrong to want that, is it? To read something so divine and delectable. Something that makes you happy just by reading it? ((sniff))
Another author who causes me pain is Anne Fortier, who wrote the book Juliet. It's another version of Romeo and Juliet. I mean, ok, she had written something else, but nothing since 2014. And Juliet was a really good book. It wasn’t The Help type of good, but it was good enough for me to want to read more of her material. And yet here I am, in 2017, after reading it 2 years ago, just sitting here looking at her Goodread’s page, waiting for an update. And then there is Claire Kells, author of Girl Underwater. Awesome book, but no follow up since 2015. Do you remember Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden? Eh, nothing since 1997. Like, really?
Ok, I guess these authors could be writing something, or have something on the back burner. And to be fair, editing is a long, tedious process. Also, the pressure of writing another hit could force them to take a step back, they might have, you know, stage fright. Plus, there’s writers block, which is the worst thing for any writer. I totally get it, I myself am a writer, and as a person who is attempting to write her own novel, I admit it’s hard. So I get it...on some level, I get it.
But...WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME, GODS OF THE AUTHORS OF THE WRITTEN WORD? The biggest question is, why do I keep picking out these authors who publish like one book every 20 years?
I mean, if I took a break like that, and wrote something spectacular, I would have the common courtesy to say, "Hey guys, I’m writing" or "I need a break" or "The struggle is real". See, those I get...silence, and my own personal thoughts on why you haven’t written anything is what I can’t deal with.
Shame on you!
I want to read something good right now! If you guys have any suggestions, feel free to drop me a line down below in the comments section. I don’t have to tell you to make sure the book you chose needs to have a follow up. Not necessarily a sequel, but just that they have written more than one book, that’s all! OR! Suggest 2-3 books! (finger shaking agreement gif)
I’m sorry, I’m just angry, emotional, and in deep pain because I haven’t read anything good in a while. (Looks away emotionally and sighs)
