Natural hair has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. It can be seen on TV shows, social media, and in everyday life. Having natural hair is definitely a journey, and this journey may not be something you love at each moment. If you try to have a positive outlook and try to remember the following things, you may see your hair as more of a positive rather than a negative.
1. Stop relying on comparison.
Comparison is something that is often taken too far. If you find yourself constantly envying another person's hair and wishing that your hair was like their's, it can be damaging to the way you feel about yourself. Instead of thinking of your hair as less than someone else's, think of it as unique! We are all created differently, so learn to thrive in your uniqueness because it sets you apart from everyone else.
2. Do your research.
This is very important! Maybe the reason why you aren't happy with your hair is because the products you are using are not working for your hair. Just because a product works for a friend who seems to have similar hair does not mean it will work for you. Not only should you research products, you should research the ingredients that are used in hair products. Keep a list of the good ingredients and the ingredients to avoid on your phone. This will come in handy when going to the store to shop for new products. It's also important to find a hair stylist who knows the ins and outs of natural hair. Find someone who has a lot of knowledge about natural hair specifically so that you have someone who can answer your questions! Finding what works for you can make your natural hair journey a more positive experience.
3. Don't be afraid to try new things!
A lot of naturals watch YouTube videos in order to see what others are using and doing to their hair. This can be very helpful in learning about new products and styles. I often find myself seeing influencers doing their hair in a certain way which leads me to do exactly the same. Sometimes, it can be more beneficial to do things your own way. No one knows your hair like you do, so don't be afraid to do your own thing.
Find a routine.
This can take some time. Figuring out what works with your hair can be difficult (I know from personal experience.) But once you get a routine going, your hair will likely be more manageable. It's important to keep up with your routine too! Some things should be done daily, weekly, or monthly. It may sound like a lot to keep up with, but it is essential if you want your hair to be at its best.
5. Make a change.
Rocking natural hair isn't for everyone, and that is okay! In recent years, it seems like having natural hair is the most desirable asset for a woman to have. Perms or relaxers have phased out, and if people still use them, others assume they don't love their hair. Not true! If rocking natural hair is not working for you, don't feel obligated to keep trying to make it work. Take a break. Do something different. Use a protective style. There is no way you can love your hair if you feel like you're stuck with it.
Your hair is YOUR hair. If you're willing, you have to take the time to find what best fits your hair and your lifestyle. I promise you won't regret doing what is best for you no matter what others think. It's all apart of being the best version of yourself!
