7 Tips For Surviving The End Of The Semester
Sherelle Brown

With the end of the school year approaching and finals coming up, I know life kind of feels like a rollercoaster. Tests and deadlines are piling up, procrastination has kicked in full throttle, you’re sleep deprived and time just certainly isn’t on your side. Don’t let the stress and anxiety get to you. You’ve made it this far, keep going! Here’s a few tips for motivation and surviving the end of the semester.

1. Go to the Library.

The library is your friend! It’s one of the best places to go to avoid distractions and study in quiet areas. A plus is that it’s open for 24 hours during finals week, so you can go study or work on assignments whenever and however long you need to.

2. Study in small chunks.

Don’t miss out on sleep trying to cram for tests the night before. Instead, study bits of information at a time. Study one piece of information making sure you understand it in its entirety before you move on. You’ll be amazed by how much information you’re able to retain if you just take it one step at a time.

3. Take breaks.

Study for about 30 minutes to an hour taking approximately five minute breaks periodically. Grab a snack, stretch your legs and take a breather. Give yourself time to relax so that you don’t burn out so soon.

4. Make flashcards.

Rewriting information helps you retain it better. Flashcards are beneficial because you’re able to figure out what information you already know and what information you need to study more. If you don’t feel like rewriting everything by hand, you can always make flashcards on Quizlet. It’s a great study tool to use, and you can also search study guides for whatever subject you’re studying for.

5. Get sleep.

Lack of sleep really affects your mental and physical health. Cramming the night before a test and getting little sleep has been proven to lead to “academic problems the following day.” Studying is real important, but not at the cost of losing a night’s rest.

6. Manage your time wisely.

Time management is important, especially if you’re involved in school, have a job, or even want to hang out with friends. Write down all assignments you have to get accomplished for that day in a planner, making sure to set aside an equal amount of time to devote to each assignment. Sometimes it helps to just go with the flow, but making a schedule could help you visualize how to best use your time.

7. Relax!

It’s okay to want to achieve academic success, but don’t let school consume you. Go out with friends, watch a movie, spend time with God, etc. Allow yourself leisure time and time to relax so that you can be in the right state of mind when finals approach. Study, study, study, but also have fun in between!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
