When finals week comes around, some people handle it really well. They either have a super easy schedule or they've never experienced anxiety before. Some people struggle with finals week though, and this article is for them.
Stay Hydrated
Don't abuse your body during finals week by forgetting to drink water. Staying hydrated will help keep your energy up and allow you to put your all into studying. Drinking water can also reduce your anxiety. Staying hydrated will only help you this exam week.
Don't Forget to Eat
Seriously. For some people, this might sound ridiculous, but for others this is really important. You have time to eat, I promise. Food will literally keep you alive through finals. Stay away from junk food and stock up on fruits, veggies, and proteins to keep your body going and your brain focused.
Get At Least 6 Hours of Sleep Each Night
Teachers and professors are stressing this more and more. Don't pull that all-nighter. Get some rest. Sleep will help you stay healthy and give your body the proper rest that it needs. It has been shown to improve concentration and keep your moods in check.
Take Breaks
This could be taking a 15 minute walk, watching ONE YouTube video (don't go down the rabbit hole), or taking time in the morning to just drink your coffee. Allow your brain to breathe. A small break or two will give you time to process information and let your stress levels drop. Relax your shoulders. Do some stretches. Get yourself ready to jump back into it.
Keep Up with Your Hygiene
Wear deodorant. Take a shower. Brush your hair. Keeping yourself clean will help keep you in better spirits. The people studying around you will appreciate it too.
Be Aware of Your Mental Health
If you're crying while writing your 20 page research paper, you didn't sleep at all last night because you had to study for an exam, and you haven't had a sip of water in days, then you need to stop. It doesn't have to be too long, but you really need to take a break or email your professor. Finals week isn't meant to push you to your limit. It's supposed to test you, but not to the point where you're breaking.
Deep Breaths
Finals are important. I'm not denying that. However, you and your well-being are more important than an A. You can always retake a class, but putting yourself into a dangerous situation with your physical or mental health is not worth it. Take care of yourself.
