It's time! You've packed up your stuff, the car is loaded, and whether you're flying or driving, you're on your way to the dorms. The place where you'll experience one of life's craziest adventures and you'll create many fond memories. Here are some things that I remember from move-in day that might help things go a bit easier for you, now that I'm looking back as I enter my sophomore year.
Firstly, it's not an easy day. You're going to get your work out in, and not just physically. It's straining for your mind and emotions and pretty much all of you, as well as whoever moves you in. My family was of immense help, I truly could not have done it without them, and they experienced all of the stress I did.
Secondly, don't go to Target or any nearby store for dorm supplies unless you absolutely have to. They're going to be so packed and picked-over. You won't find the things you want and you'll be entering a complete madhouse to do so. My best tip would be to bring as much with you from home as you can of the supplies you need, and from there, try to order ahead of time or buy things that you need after the move-in chaos in the area has died down. The chaos is hard to avoid and can mess up your whole day.
Remember that this room is the place where you'll make your best friends, study for big exams, and relax. Decorations are important, but functionality is, too. You want to be comfortable while feeling at home and at peace in the tiny space you're moving into.
If your building is multiple stories, the elevator is going to have a long line. Translation: You're probably taking the stairs. Sometimes parking is far away, too. Moral of the story? Take your time, make trips, consolidate, and be ready to break a sweat. I was on the 7th floor and pretty much packed my whole life with me, so my fam and I were really burning calories.
On to packing: Pack what you need and little extra. Don't be like me and pack every little thing you might need. It's not worth it and the space you're in is far too small. Along with that, remember that storage under the bed and proper closet containers go a long way.
When it comes to organization, make sure to establish a system of where things go when you move in. Being organized will keep your stress at ease this year and make things a lot easier.
On top of organization, make sure you don't forget some essentials, like lighting, photos of important people (I know not everyone is into photos, but even keeping some prints in a drawer is a good reminder of who's behind you on the journey toward your degree on the tougher days), extension cords, mattress protectors (some of those dorm mattresses are nasty), lysol wipes (a huge lifesaver when you're cleaning a dorm), and a few plates, cups, and utensils to make any in-dorm microwave cooking easier.
Besides all the packing, unpacking, and setting up, it's important to remember that despite this being a stressful day, it's a monumental one. Remember that there will be emotions, there will be tough goodbyes, and that being overwhelmed is normal. Soon enough you'll find your routine and the people you struggle to say goodbye to today will be back to visit you or will be rejoicing in your success and newfound adventure with you. It's a crazy time but now that I'm about to start my sophomore year, I know that it's exciting and so worth it. Cold feet are normal, but take the leap and you'll soon find that this year could and will likely be the best of your life.
Good luck, and have fun!
