I know what you're thinking- I should always tip my server(s) when I go out to eat but I don't and here's why.
Let me start off by saying that when I go to a restaurant to eat, I always walk in there with intentions to tip.
I always have extra cash on me for that reason. I've always been taught that the menu price is for the food and the tipping is for the service and, if you think about it, that's exactly how it is. I'm not going to be one of those people who tell the servers to get a new job if they don't like how much they're making because if all servers got a new job, who would serve customers if they wanted to go out to eat rather than cook at home?
I believe that tips are earned.
Simply, good service earns you a good tip and bad service typically earns you nothing. Now, don't get me wrong. If my food comes to my table and there's mayo on my burger when I specifically said no mayo, I wouldn't take that out on the waitress as it isn't their fault but if my server is paying more attention to their phone and sitting down, chatting with their coworkers instead of taking care of their tables, that, to me, doesn't deserve a tip. I in no way expect to be waited on every second of me being at the restaurant, but there's no reason to be waiting 25 minutes for a refill on water (and yes, that has happened before).
I always take into consideration how busy my server is.
If they have 10 tables to tend to, I won't get irritated when they don't bring a ketchup bottle to my table within 2 minutes. A lazy or rude server doesn't deserve any gratuity.
I will always tip accordingly, depending on the service received.
So before you take a picture of a receipt that has a "0" written on the "Tip" line, think about the service you just gave that customer. I'll continue to walk into restaurants with every intention to tip, but the tip you may or may not receive from a customer will (almost) always be because of the quality of service and experience.
