Every year, TIME magazine releases an issue where they feature a profile of a person who has stood out in the past year.

Past winners include some of the most influential names you can think of like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, and even the computer. This title is given to a person, or sometimes a group of people, whom TIME believes has made the most impact on society over the course of the year, who made a change that will affect our lives and the course of history forever.

I woke up this morning to a text from my sister saying "The TIME Person of The Year is perfect". I didn't even realize it was coming out today. After President Trump's infamous tweets about supposedly being contacted to be TIME's Person of The Year for 2018 , the second year in a row, I didn't really care to hear if he was right or not until my sister's comments. So I took to Google to see just who was perfect enough to warrant my sister's praise.

The Silence Breakers.

I was far from disappointed. I was far from annoyed. TIME made the absolute perfect decision because they were right. The Silence Breakers, as they dubbed them, were a group of mainly women who started to speak out against their experiences with being victims of sexual harassment, catapulting a change that is far from being over. But there are some important things that add to the impact of the article that isn't found in just the words that are reported.

The idea for the article itself was created and reported by women. The video that is part of the story was created by women. The entire layout of the profile was created by women. In a world where men hold a lot of power in the workforce, this issue continued to reflect the voices of the women that it was about by having women spearhead it. It's refreshing and it makes the stories feel untainted, raw, and true.

In the article released online, you'll notice that it is not simply a women's fight. Statistically, it is true that women are more often the victims of sexual predators, but to make a change it's important to recognize that men are too, more than society cares to recognize. Some men are also at the forefront of the fight, using their voices that, as men, are typically given more merit to stand up and help those who haven't been able to help themselves. This is not a problem for women. It is a problem for society.

One of the most unnerving parts of the article was President Trump. His name was mentioned eight times throughout the article in reference to him perpetuating the unsafe culture of sexual harassment as president. It commented on how discouraging it is that a man with so many allegations against him about this subject who has spoken in such a crude way and has all but admitted to his misconducts can be trusted by this country to lead us as president.

And even worse, that he was TIME's Person of The Year runner-up. Let that sink in. If the SIlence Breakers weren't the Person of The Year, it would've been a man who helped create that silence. I guess for progress to win, every couple steps forward will be met with one step back.

As I went to my classes today, I made sure the people around me knew just who was named Person of The Year. I was taken aback by some of the comments I got back, such as "that's weird", "why would they do that", "it's Person of The Year not People of The Year", and most importantly "I don't see why it's such a big deal".

Harmless questions and responses to something that perplexes them just showed me how deep of a problem this has become, how trained we have been to accept things and stay silent for the sake of being nice or not making anyone uncomfortable, when all this does is teach the new generation that they shouldn't have to fear consequences for such actions. This is going to change that.

Even writing this is making me emotional. It's been not just inspiring to see the wave of justice rolling through or society taking down predators who thought they could get away with it but disheartening because it's finally being revealed just how bad things have gotten, how many people have been hurt, and how unsafe we all are. It doesn't just affect that person you hear about walking home alone in the dark. It can happen to anyone, and it has.

And The Silence Breakers are taking the step to try and make sure that this ends here and now, and to that, they're the Person of the Century in my book.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
