Coming Home From College

How things are different now.

Finals are over, we're packing up our dorm rooms, saying goodbye to the friends we have lived with for the past few months and wishing everyone a happy summer. I can't be more excited to come home and spend some quality time with family, friends and take a break from all of the work. Strangely enough, you may have changed; but odds are, home hasn't changed much at all.

1. You can't just come home whenever you want...

Yes, we all have those nights where we don't get back until four or five in the morning because we were out having a good time. Mom and Dad do not want to stay up that late waiting for you to come home safe. The curfew you had once before may still be in place.

2. I don't know how you live your life, but you probably don't get sh*t faced at home like you do at school...

We all know college students tend to drink under-age; nobody is naive. Your parents may not be able to control what you're doing at school, but they sure as hell are not going to let you party and pass out on the bathroom floor like you've been doing.

3. Chores...

Ahh yes, it was great to be away and be a slob if you wanted to be. You only had to clean when there were "room inspections." I don't know how you grew up, but if you're living at home with Mom and Dad you're expected to help keep up with the house, which means doing your chores and keeping everything neat. Washing the dishes becomes foreign because you're so used to eating cafeteria food and going out to eat.

4. Letting your parents know where you're going and what you're doing...

When you live away at school, your parents don't know the crazy adventures you're going on and what time you're going. Mom and Dad are gonna wanna know where you're going, with who and what time you will be home. It's hard to just not walk out the door like you have been the past couple of months.

5. Leaving old friends and coming home to new friends...

You're already dreading leaving your friends at school because you have lived with them for the past couple of months and you can't even imagine life without them. But at the same time, it's exciting to catch up with old friends and tell them some of your greatest memories along with making new ones.

6. Family asking how your year went...

Uhhhhmm yeah, Grandma, lots of studying... Sike. I don't know you but I know that's not the only thing you were doing... Family is gonna ask about your year, your workload, if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet or if you went to any crazy parties. Weird. I don't know how open your family is about these things.

So how do you feel about coming home from college; excited, overwhelmed, or are you completely dreading it?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
