It's That Time Again

10 things you need to start the school year right.

It's That Time Again
Sleeping is for Losers

Summer is coming to a quick close, and we are once again starting the school year. Here are a few things you will definitely need in a couple short weeks.

1. Sleep

You may think that you can get through school without much sleep. You're wrong. Get the recommended amount of sleep, and if you are studying for a test and can't stay awake, don't. By that point, you are not going to retain any more information. Just go to sleep. You'll be much better off.

2. An alarm Clock (A phone, essentially...)

This is the most important physical item for me. Waking up is hard to do, especially when you're waking up to do something you don't particularly want to do. So, set your alarm as many times as you need to wake up on time.

3. Another alarm clock

Across the room. Honestly, it'll get you up if your other alarm won't.

4. Inexpensive food

Chances are, you don't have much money if you're in school. So, buy some food that is fairly inexpensive and nutritious. In my experience, soup and sandwiches can get you the best bang for your buck. Though everyone's preferences are different, there are enough variations of these foods.

5. Neutral colored clothes

Buy clothes that you can easily pair with each other. Throw it on and go. Also, leggings are pants. Go with it.

6. Paper and pencils

Sometimes it's just easier to write things out. Typing your notes may be easy, but not as efficient, since everyone's note taking practices are different. Sometimes the "old-fashioned" way is just more beneficial.

7. Coffee

I hope your campus has a cafe. Even if it does, invest in a tiny Keurig. It'll get the job done, and once you purchase it, it is fairly inexpensive to get your caffeine from there. Also, you can use it for just hot water which can go in your Ramen or oatmeal, which are easy, cheap foods.

8. An organized living space

A clean home brings a clear mind. If you are not necessarily a tidy person, still try to keep some space on your desk and your studying will go much smoother, in my experience.

9. A hobby

You can't just do school. You have to focus on becoming not just a well-rounded student, but also a well-rounded person. Whether you get involved with dance, theater, sports or whatever, do something other than school. It'll help you not to burn out as quickly, trust me.

10. A realistic goal

Don't expect a 4.0 if you don't have the time or the motivation. You should absolutely strive for improvement, but striving for perfection may not be wholly realistic. Do what you can do and don't stress the rest. It'll all come out in the wash.

School is not always a great time, but you reach for your little dreams. Grab support from your surrounding and be the best you can be. That's all you can do.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
