Once you enter the pearly gates of college it's all new and adventurous. You enter into a world where you make new friends, build new skills, and discover what you want to do in life. It's a great experience and during your four years at college would be the most memorable of all school years. At Spelman College as soon as you set foot on the ground, they make sure that you know that you have to get an internship, fellowship, or research program during the summer. They send email after email about different internships and other things of that nature practically every day of the school year. If you don't have an internship of some sort during the summer than you are basically shunned or looked down upon. So, this summer like the last summer I don't have an internship or fellowship or whatever. I am the human couch potato it seems for the summer. If your like me then you know what I'm talking about then, glued to the TV (preferably Netflix) on the bed or couch in your pajamas lounging around all summer. Here are three ideas for you to make your summer better than doing absolutely nothing all summer.
Get a job that lines up with your career interest, even though this is what practically everyone does doing the summer. Getting a summer job is the go to thing of course, having some money in your pocket isn't such a bad thing. However, a lot of people get jobs that doesn't align with the careers they have in mind. The reason that a lot of people don't get internships is because the skill sets do not match up with the internship. Even though we are trying to get an internship to get experience and those certain set of skills (which is crazy if you ask me). If you are like me who has never had a job in her life and doesn't know where to start, you should go to the career center that is on campus. Yes, it does exist even though you may not seen it but it's there alright. You may have come late but better late than never to get some tips on how to get a job and setting up a resume`.
It's summer and you want to have fun! Not everyone wants to get a job and work during the whole summer, so you could use this time to do things that you wouldn't normally do. Step out of your comfort zone and do something you never done before. If you're an introvert, like myself, try to go to a party, start off small though don't want to overload yourself that quick. Make the summer memorable because the next summer you are most likely going to be working. So, you can do all that you want to break that shell or experience something new other than parties like going to the museum. The opportunities are endless. Stepping out of your comfort zone will be hard and of course uncomfortable but, you might just enjoy doing something different and learn a thing or two.
You can always revert back to the Netflix marathon you had in mind. Let's be honest a most likely this is going to happen for a good chunk of the summer. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, to just catch up on shows that you missed during the school year. I could definitely watch the Game of Thrones to see what is all the hype about. Maybe you can start reading that book you never got past chapter one on, I know I have a couple of books I didn't finish during school that were left on the shelf collecting dust. So get out there and try to do something productive during the summer time. Next time around you would be prepared and ready to go...or not.
