One of the major lessons that Minnesotans have to learn early on is to be accepting of whatever type of weather that decides to show up during the year. While considering the dramatic shifts that occur from season to season in Minnesota, the transition from winter to spring might be one of the worst that we have to endure. Between snowstorms one day and 50-degree weather the next, we never know what may be coming up on the schedule. Is it going to snow a foot? Maybe. Is it going to rain for two days? It is definitely possible. We take what we can get and go with the flow all while secretly hoping that enjoying the summer on a lake comes sooner rather than later. Here are seven stages of thought that Minnesotans go through during the transition from winter to spring.
1. The arrival of the sun.
What is that big ball of fire in the sky? Oh, the sun! Some of us probably forgot it even existed. When we finally see the sun for the first time since November, it is as though we have never seen it before. Let it shine!
2. The heat.
Today is the day that you finally feel some type of warmth caress your pale skin. The feeling is irreplaceable and undeniably one of the greatest feelings that a Minnesotan can experience. Bring on the heat!
3. The temperature.
Here is the day when the temperature finally reaches past 50 degrees. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and there is hope for Minnesotans to finally be able to catch some UV rays. The T-shirts, the shorts, and sometimes even the flip-flops begin to emerge from the back of the closest.
4. Questioning our lives.
After about a week of blessed weather, we begin to feel spoiled. What did we ever do to deserve this? Oh, that's right, we endured three months of below-freezing temperatures and sunsets at 4:00 pm.
5. Finally considering the existence of global warming.
As much as we enjoy the weather, we begin to wonder if it is actually supposed to be this warm this early. So does this mean that global warming is real? Should we be happy about this or slightly worried? This debate will last a while.
6. Reality hitting way too hard.
Just when we all spoke too soon, the wind picks up, the air becomes crisp again, and Kare11 News tells us that it's going to snow 8-12 inches next week. All of our hopes and dreams for a shorter winter are crushed.
7. Winter returns for a while.
Are you surprised? You shouldn't be. As the final stage before spring stays for a while, it is no shock that winter decides to make its final debut. All we have to do is hold on to the hope that it will only be a couple more weeks of hell.
