Thoughts Students Have During the First Week of Class

Now that school is back in session and the first week, full of syllabi and “ice breakers,” is officially over, I’ve realized it’s ONLY been a week.

Even though I looked forward to classes starting back up again and the “routine” inevitably created by day-to-day life, this week has been the longest week ever.

I don’t know if there was a shift in the planets or it’s that the summer days are now coming to end, but after talking to one of my classmates, and complaining about the length of the homework, we both look at each other and said “It’s only been 6 days since class started.”

I know most people probably think school years go fast, and those people probably are graduates who know to “cherish every moment in school,” but why is the first week the longest week ever.

We (students) all have certain thoughts during the first week or so of classes and campus life so now I will count down the things we all think during the first week of classes.

1. “If I have an 8 AM class, do I go to bed at 10 PM and get enough sleep OR should I stay up until 3 AM and watch Netflix and maybe get 5 hours of sleep”

2. “When’s this class over… it’s only been 5 minutes!?!?!”

Then you continue to check the clock every 3 minutes, until the official end of class.

3. “Did I remember my keys?”

Nobody wants to get locked out and have an awkward conversation with your roommates.

4. “When’s break?”

Sadly, it’s not until Thanksgiving and you have around two months to wait.

5. “Do I have time to eat before class or will I have to wait until 3:00 PM?”

6. “This is only a core class, it’s not THAT serious.”

This is lie. All of your classes are pretty serious.

7.“I don’t remember any of these people from last year!”

Being in college, that means there is almost no consistency with the people around you. New people transfer, freshman come into the school system, and people drop- out.

8. “Is this week over yet?”

While, I think, almost every student thinks these things during the first week, I’m sure they also have a lot of positive thoughts that help them through the week. Whether it’s a certain class, a person, or a group of friends, find your positive vibe and keep going. After all, there’s about 14 weeks in a semester.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
