Being the girl who's worked with children her entire life, I've constantly had people tell me to become a teacher. I'm someone who has always hated being told what to do so obviously my whole life I've told myself I would never want to become a teacher, but man was I wrong.
I've never been this excited for a major change and trust me I've changed my major so many times already I've lost count
When I was younger, I was able to volunteer at a school for kids with disabilities that my mom worked at. Getting to work alongside my mother and just seeing how passionate she is about her career choice really inspired me to look deep inside my soul and open myself up to an idea that I never thought was for me.
I guess the moment I truly fell in love with the idea of becoming a teacher was when I started working for the daycare that I still currently work at. Having the children listen to me and actually being able to teach them even the simplest things has put a huge smile on my face every day. Also not going to lie being called "Miss Sydney" by little children is really adorable
I remember being extremely hesitant about this decision and what other people would think of me because of the negative stigma revolved around teaching. Yes, pay may suck but if you look at the bigger picture, being an education major can take you far. I know many people who started off as education majors and ended up slowly moving up within the field and now make double the salary they started off with. So at the end of the day, if you're worried about salary I'm here to tell you that any career you chose you will start at the bottom and have to work your way up to your desired salary.
Also, that whole "Those who can't do, teach" attitude needs to be stopped. This was yet another reason I was hesitant about informing my friends and family about my change. Many people look at education as their last resort or backup plan, as if it's an awful thing to want to become a teacher. It's not this way at all.Teachers literally teach children many important concepts that they will need later in life. Did you think you just came out of the womb knowing your ABC's already? No, you can thank your teachers for that and many other things you know thanks to them.
Many people have told me that becoming an education major is the easiest major and I'm here to say that's entirely false. No, it's not an easy major because honestly there's no such thing as an easy major. Some majors may be more challenging than others but that doesn't make some majors just pain easy. Getting an education, in general, takes hard work and dedication. If it was that easy to become a teacher then you wouldn't even need a degree, but obviously, that's not the case.
I never really thought I would write anything along these lines, but I really do believe that this career path is perfect for me. No matter what you chose to do in life, there will always be people that will either support your decision or not. It's entirely up to you to either care about what others think or about what truly makes you happy.
If you chose a job for the sole purpose of making money or making others happy rather than making yourself happy, then odds are you'll end up not loving
