"Universities ought to have skin in the game. When a student shows up, they ought to say ‘Hey, that psych major deal, that philosophy major thing, that’s great, it’s important to have liberal arts … but realize, you’re going to be working [at] a Chick-fil-A.’" - Jeb Bush
To anyone who agrees with this comment,
At my university, I'm taking a class called Abnormal Psychology. It's a class I've been looking forward to taking since I first came to my university. I was beyond ecstatic when I was able to finally register for it last semester. I walked into this class on Tuesday night and almost immediately I wanted to leave. It's a three-hour class, so time sort of dragged on.
Looking back on it, though, I've learned such valuable information in that class. While it's true that I've learned most of this information in Psych 101, we're going deeper into each topic. In college, you have the freedom to take any class you want. However, that class that you know you're going to fail might be a requirement for your major or university, in which case, it's mandatory.
A college student could go their whole college career never taking a psychology class above Psychology 101, and I pity that person. I pity them because their business management class won't teach them how to help a family member, best friend, co-worker, significant other, son, or daughter that's battling depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Mental illness is gaining more prevalence in the United States every day.
I have a question for you. Who do you think is going to help your son or daughter when they tell you they've considering suicide more and more every day? Who are you going to call when your wife never gets out of bed and doesn't find pleasure in things only days after having your first newborn? The answer is a psychologist or therapist. You know... the person you said is going to end up working at Chick Fil A.
Most people (such as yourself) dismiss psychology almost immediately. They think that it's stupid and psychology majors just don't know what we want to do with our lives and to declare ourselves psychology majors is an excuse while we're still figuring everything out. Psychology majors won't get jobs right? Wrong. To graduate with a degree in psychology gives you more freedom than graduating with a degree in business EVER will.
It's almost a given guarantee that ANYONE in the psychology field loves their job. They genuinely enjoy waking up every day to help someone in need of their assistance. We want to help people reach their fullest potential. It might be that they've reached a really low point in their lives; well guess what? A clinical psychologist is here to help. What about a child that's the victim of abuse and needs help? Who are they reaching out to? A school psychologist or social worker. People will always have problems. Someone will always have an internal struggle that they need help battling. That's what we're here for. We want to help.
So to anyone that thinks Jeb Bush's statement is correct,
Love,
#ThisPsychMajor who can't wait to help children in need.
