A little over a year ago, a show was released on Netflix that was meant to bring light to an important topic in our current day and age. "13 Reasons Why" was originally a book by Jay Asher that was made into a movie in the hopes of helping people understand the issue of suicide, to see how there are factors in our world being neglected that contribute to suicide. Upon the show’s release, people went crazy for it in both a good and bad way.
Some people praised it, saying they were so happy that someone was finally tackling this issue head-on and not shying away from the honest truth. Others believed it glorified suicide. Instead of showing how suicide can affect the people you love, it made it seem like suicide is something people should do if they want revenge or to be remembered. Regardless of the public’s opinion, the original creators pushed forward and have decided to release the second part to the both riveting and controversial show.
The second season of "13 Reasons Why" comes out on May 18, 2018. Season one had a clear purpose laid out for it: show the true, sad, and heartbreaking reality of suicide. So, now that Hannah is gone and the tapes are finished, what is there to be done? What other issues will be tackled? How long can this go on?
After Netflix released the trailer for season two, the world began to buzz about the possibilities. The last episode of the first season displayed one of the characters, who had been frequently bullied, hiding various guns and ammunition in a chest in his room. This left everyone wondering if the second season would bring a school shooting, but the trailer for season two didn’t seem to hint towards that at all. Also, the end of season one involved the suicide of a different character as a result of everything that happened with the tapes, but his story doesn’t seem to play in to season two at all either. Basically, they either excluded both of those key factors, or they decided to keep the end results a surprise for us all.
What can be seen is that they continue with the trial against the school and seem to attack the issue of Bryce, the jock who raped two of the main female characters. Around both of those situations, the truth seemingly begins to unfold and it doesn’t appear to go too well with the main characters. The same dark and angry theme sets the background for this season and fills the characters. Clay can be seen with a gun and more visible anger than the first season while Hannah haunts his imagination, making him question his every decision.
It also looks as if two new characters are being added to the bunch in an attempt to mix things up a bit. One may even be a female love interest for Bryce. However, do they know about everything that happened with the tapes? The truth about Bryce? Jessica? If they don’t, then what purpose will be served by integrating them into the murky mix? I guess the only way to find out is by watching the newest season.
So, don’t forget to watch season two of "13 Reasons Why" on Netflix on May 18th. I will most definitely be watching and trying to decipher the endings of the thirteen reasons from season one.
