I don’t know about you, but I love TV more so than I do movies. From "Stranger Things" to "Game of Thrones" to "The Walking Dead", there are so many action-packed shows on TV, Netflix and beyond. But amidst all of the hype, action, and steaminess of all of today’s hits and cult classics comes a surprisingly good, quasi-cheesy dramedy on NBC called “This Is Us”.
“This Is Us” follows the lives of 30-something-year-old triplets Kate, Kevin and Randall Pearson as they navigate through their turning point from young to old. Kate (Chrissy Metz) struggles to lose the weight she’s carried throughout her life while maintaining a stable relationship with her significant other, Toby (Chris Sullivan). Kevin (Justin Hartley) is a Hollywood actor who’s consistently asking to go the extra mile in his career. Randall (Sterling K. Brown) is Kate and Kevin’s adoptive brother, who goes on a spiritual journey to reconnect with his biological roots. While the show tells their stories, it also explores childhood flashbacks that shape the present, including their mother (Mandy Moore) and late father (Milo Ventimiglia).
One of the reasons why I love this show is because the storytelling is so candid and emotional in such a way that makes you want more. If you’re one to claim that you never get emotional during sad shows and movies, then this one will break it for you.
I also love this show because it resonates so many messages that are much well needed in today’s ever-judgmental society. It teaches you to be the fullest version of yourself, and that your significant other and family are responsible for helping you stay that way. It teaches you that family isn’t defined by blood but by love and mutual support.
It teaches us to not take anything for granted; otherwise, karma will strike back.
And perhaps that’s the main reason why I admire “This Is Us”. Anyone who watches it can empathize with the characters, messages, or the storyline in some aspect. People can relate to Kate in her struggle to remain positive about her body image. Chrissy Metz, who portrays Kate, even says regarding her relationship with Kate that, "This is [her]. [Her] life and Kate’s life are parallel. [They] all have something that [they’re] sort of ashamed about… everybody can relate to that vein of ‘I’m not proud of this, but I want to be.’” Others, like myself, can relate to Kevin in his quest to look for something more in his passions and Randall in his search for identity and acceptance. Without giving out spoilers, the storyline involves scenes that deal with the weight of sudden loss and the difficulty of forgiving someone who did something wrong.
“This Is Us” is extremely popular because its plot is rooted in family that invokes the humanity in all of us. Not only is the show binge-worthy but it’s heartwarming, gut-wrenching and empathetic. Its themes of loss, acceptance, and compassion and its brilliant acting strike a chord that compels viewers like myself wanting more.
So grab the tissues and popcorn, and add “This Is Us” to your watchlist.
The show is fundamentally different from the action and adventure shows that dominate watch-lists today, but believe me when I say this show is just as addicting and brilliant as anything else on TV, regardless of whether or not you enjoy watching cheesy dramedies.
“This Is Us” is on Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
