(There will be spoilers ahead) I'm the type of person that doesn't like experiencing the kind of emotions that make my ice-cold heart melt; I enjoy my hard exterior and have very few things that break past it. Then, my roommate introduced me to NBC's hit show "This Is Us" and all of that changed.
After the first episode, I fell in love with Jack and Rebecca's relationship and their love for each other, it was the exact outline of what I believe a perfect relationship is like--there are ups and downs, but always love. Once I thought it couldn't get any worse, we were introduced to their kids, and I knew I was done for.
I turned to my roommate just as the first episode ended and she knew exactly what I was going to say, "We have to watch the second episode. I HAVE to know more."
We then proceeded to stay up until one in the morning, binge-watching this show, knowing that we had to be up at 5:45 a.m.
And much to my dismay, I have continued to watch this emotion-causing show and have experienced as many as five emotions during a 30-minute period. Happiness, sadness, longing, empathy, and hopefulness.
If you know me, you know those are emotions I feel very very seldom.
I have never felt so happy that Kate is engaged to Toby. I have never been so sad that William decided to stop chemotherapy. I have an extreme sense of longing for a relationship just like Rebecca and Jack's. I've never felt so much empathy for Randall after all that he had to deal with as a child. And I have so much hope for the family as a whole.
I hate to admit that I have cried tears of joy and sadness all in a span of 15 seconds. I have laughed until my stomach hurts, and I've been so angry at the show that I put it in timeout...for the duration of one minute while I waited for it to reload.
While I despise people who jump on the bandwagon—such as all the people who became Tarheel fans after they won the National Championship in 2017—I will admit that this show has me hooked for life.
So if you're fully prepared to fall in love with at least 16 people, while crying both tears of joy and sadness, and you know that you can't just watch one episode, then "This Is Us" is the perfect show for you.
