Post Malone. Ed Sheeran. Sam Smith. Twenty One Pilots. The Weeknd. These artists are some of the best artists in the music game at the moment. But, there are some people from the older generations that say all of the millennial generation music belongs in the garbage. And, to that, I say that is completely wrong.
I will give past generations credit for having some amazing music! I love classic rock that came out of the 70s and 80s. Artists like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Beastie Boys, Van Halen, etc. all have a special place in my music library. That being said, my playlist can go from AC/DC to TOP real quick.
Anyways, back to why I believe that this generation's music doesn't get the credit it deserves from previous generations, I believe the reason people criticize the music of this generation so harshly is because they've only seen/heard the artists that aren't all that great. (We're all looking at you, Lil Pump.)
One thing that really brings down this generation's music in my opinion is the stupid mumble rap. Urban Dictionary (phenomenal resource, right?) defines mumble rap as "Rappers that make music with lyrics very difficult to understand or rappers that make a song with very basic lyrics and use adlibs (ay,yuh) to make it sound dope." So, yeah. That stuff is dog crap. But you can look no further than current rappers killing it in the music game such as Kendrick Lamar and Eminem (yes, Eminem is still going strong) to know that all current rap is not mumble rap.
Another criticism music nowadays gets is that every song can seem very sexual in nature. Well, ok you've got me there. A good bit of today's music is sexual BUT don't notice the speck of sand in our eye while you ignore the log in your own eye. A lot of songs back in the day were sexual, too! Example: AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long." Literally, the title is sexual! Granted, it's a classic and it will never die but sex in songs has been around for a loooooooong time.
So, next time a person from a previous generation judges your music taste, just remember this. They probably had their music tastes judged too. Who knows? Maybe mumble rap will be considered classic stuff in the future that will be played on throwback radio stations. I hope not. But, that's beyond my control. So go jam without any regrets!
