“This is Us” has been dominating the small screen for about a year. The show stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K Brown, Justin Hartley and Chrissy Metz. It has been nominated for many awards and Sterling even won an Emmy and a SAG award for his portrayal of Randall Pearson. It isn’t a surprise that NBC gave them a post Super Bowl episode to celebrate their amazing success.
Season 2 brought in 12.9 million viewers on premiere night. 3.9 million of those viewers ages ranged from 18 to 49. "This is Us" is not the first huge show to air after the Superbowl. The hit sitcom "Friends" aired their Superbowl episode right after the big game in 1996. Also "The Voice" held Blind Auditions in 2012. Other shows like "Brothers and Sisters", "CHiPs", "All in The Family" also had spots post Superbowl. I'm glad that they are being recognized for their hard work.
For people that have been watching the show since the beginning, this episode couldn’t come fast enough. Throughout the show, we are reminded that perfect father figure Jack Pearson (Ventimiglia) unfortunately dies. However, we do not know how until Sunday’s episode.
Ventimiglia often reiterates to fans that we should remember how Jack lived. He was the head of the household, an amazing father and human being. Of course he was flawed but who isn't? He always made sure Rebecca and the kids were taken care of no matter what. It was also his idea to adopt Randall.
On the most recent episode that aired, we see the Pearson family home on fire. It turns out that after he cleaned up Jack turned off a crockpot in the kitchen only to have it go on fire. Many fans think that this is how Jack will meet his demise. All of his children didn't want to hangout with him so if that was Jack's last day alive, that's pretty sad. I personally think the writers will make it less obvious because they have always kept us on our toes. This whole season so far we have watched flashbacks of the fire. I don’t think they would give us the answer that easy. Also, there are leaked photos of Jack's funeral and Kevin isn't wearing a cast. This show has turned us all into private investigators.
According to Sterling K. Brown, this Superbowl episode is "like a superhero movie". Fans of the show know how much of a huge football fan Jack was. Not only did he die on Super Bowl Sunday but we will also be watching it 20 years later, mind blown. Those writers are so smart.
No matter how Jack dies, we know it’s going to break our hearts. So get ready to root for your favorite team and remember Jack right after. If only the Steelers were playing.
